Toy guns will not be allowed in or around the Republican Convention site in Cleveland. Neither will water guns, aerosol cans, or tennis balls. Ohio’s open carry laws, however, require police to allow access to those carrying guns.
“It’s the law in this state. As police chief, I’m bound to uphold the law in this state,” [Police Chief Calvin Williams] added. [...]
The group Oath Keepers said this week that they would appear at the RNC armed, while the chairman of the New Black Panther Party also said that his group may carry weapons at an event designed to protest police brutality in advance of the RNC. Event organizers of the police brutality event later said that no armed demonstrators were expected.
Individual Republican delegates have also pledged to show up armed. While open carry will be permitted in the downtown area surrounding the convention, Secret Service restrictions will bar attendees from carrying guns into the convention itself.

The Philippines said on Monday it would withdraw its troops from Iraq as soon as possible to save a Filipino hostage threatened with death by militants.
CNN quoted unidentified Philippine officials as saying they expected truck driver Angelo de la Cruz to be released on Tuesday, but no independent confirmation was available.
Al Jazeera broadcast footage of Philippine deputy foreign minister Rafael Seguis reading out a statement, which the television station translated into Arabic, shortly after the expiry of a new execution deadline set by the militants.
"In response to your request, the Philippines ... will withdraw its humanitarian forces as soon as possible," Seguis said according to the translation of the statement, addressed to the Islamic Army in Iraq group holding 46-year-old de la Cruz.
