There’s a few people talking about leaving the country after the election, but I am one of the few who is actually booking a ticket. Why not Kunming? As you might expect, the stress of waiting to see whether good manages to triumph over evil, has been building up. I’m not alone in the desire… but you always need 1)motive, 2) a plan, and 3) the opportunity. All three have fallen into place… or are about to do so..… and the destination will be Kathmandu.
Because it’s there? to tell the truth I saw it from the airplane window one time, but since nobody actually lives there, it’s not a place I travel.
Actually, I just got back to USA a few weeks ago. From Nepal, the Himalayan country. you know — as in Everest? Diligent readers of dailyKOS will perhaps recall that last winter I wrote a series of diaries about the politics of Nepal. Don’t ask me for a brief recap. It can’t be done.
In 2016 I spent nine weeks in the Terai, the flat and hot part of the country. When I go, I teach critical care skills to doctors and nurses. I spent time at the teaching hospitals of four medical colleges, including the one in Janakpur, one of the poorest districts of Nepal. I also teach de-escalation skills to nurses and doctors — how to prevent anger from spiraling out of control and becoming a victim of “thrashing" by distraught relatives.
We could use some anger management in USA.
Here is something to take your mind off things:
I also trained personnel at the National Burn Center of Nepal. There’s lots of ways a person can sustain a burn injury in a Low Income Country.
To Make a Long Story Short
I have been catching up with my own activity by adding to my Nepal blog, and if you need an escape from what passes for reality in USA, you can browse the entries. Here’s a bit of escapism, below:
There’s lots of people who write trekker's guides to Solu Khumbu, the approach route to Everest Base Camp. But I may be the only person who has posted an actual tourist guide to Biratnagar, Nepal. For 2017, when I go, I’ve created a crowd-funding campaign designed to help me purchase equipment to teach with when I return in 2017. It's named the "Himalayan ZapFest 2017." My project in Nepal is five years old, and it goes on…..
In the meantime, I’ll stay here until I vote ( straight D of course) and work to get others out to do so.
Nepal News
It’s still an under-reported country. If it were a US state it would be second in population only to California. I’ll get motivated to relay the news from there again.. after the USA election.
