The day after presiding over a particularly spectacular antisemitic car crash on his Infowars show Thursday, Alex Jones filed for personal bankruptcy in the Southern District of Texas, Houston. Citing the almost $1.5 billion in damages juries have awarded to the victims of his disinformation campaigns, Jones claims his assets are worth somewhere between $1 and $10 million. Jones’ filing is also claiming his liabilities are between $1 and $10 billion. Many agree that the latter range of liabilities is likely legitimate, but wonder where all of his wealth seems to have disappeared to.
Jones joins his Infowars company in filing for Chapter 11 protections. As with many of these right-wing operations, pleading poverty has been used frequently as a way to shield perpetrators of hate, like the NRA and Jones, to get out of their financial responsibilities. The entire legal process the Sandy Hook Elementary school families endured with Jones has been fraught with the most obvious delay tactics.
This move is most likely a way for Jones to delay the payments a few courts have ruled he must make to families of Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting victims. Jones spent years promoting the very false conspiracy theory that the parents and loved ones of the children murdered in Sandy Hook Elementary School more than ten years ago were “crisis actors,” and the entire tragedy was really a pretend event. Jones was able to parley this very erroneous drivel into a lot of money.

Sandy Hook families have already asked the federal bankruptcy court handling the Infowars filing to take away Jones’ control, saying they believed he was siphoning off finances in order to hide money from the families. Infowars filed for bankruptcy before the first of three juries determined the dollar amount in damages Jones owed the families he terrorized.
