Regular readers will remember that back in late January Casa Brillig welcomed a new pup to the pack. Back then he was a wee 19lbs and 11 weeks old. Just under five months have passed and this Thursday he’ll officially be 8 months old. As you can tell from his updated photo, he’s grown just a little bit :-). When we weighed him a week or so ago, he was just under 70lbs, and we’ve been told that larger breeds can continue to grow for around a year and a half, so he’s… not done yet.
We were eager to find out what else he was besides boxer (his adoption papers said he is a boxer mix), and also finally find out what else our other dog, a Plotthound mix found abandoned with no info on either parent, had inside. After checking around we decided to order test kits from Embark, because it has a feature that allows you to connect with other dogs related to yours, and we knew he was from a litter of at least six. We swabbed canine cheeks, and given our elder dog does NOT like her mouth touched I am grateful we got a good sample the first time because we were never going to be able to do it a second time! We sent them away, and recently got our results back!
First up, our Plottie, who turned out to be a delightful mix of lots of things:
17% Beagle
13.4% Golden Retriever
12.9% Keeshond
12.6% Plott (yay!! She really is a Plottie!)
12.6% ChowChow
7.5% Redbone Coonhound (and thus genetically related to our late great Snicker pup)
6% German Shepherd Dog
Lastly, 18% Supermutt which I think is code for “we don’t really know, but it’s canine”
We eagerly opened up the Pup’s results, and learned that he is… 0% Boxer. Zero. Nada. No Boxer. Not a boxer haplotype or marker to be found.
He is, however:
32% American Pitt Bull Terrier
29% Great Pyrenees (!!!)
19% American Bully
12% American Staffordshire Terrier
8% Supermutt
We’re not mentioning this to our local dog licensing board or our homeowners insurance, because (1) there could be boxer in that Supermutt bit; (2) inaccuracy in testing; and (3) they SAID he was a boxer mix, but we can call him a Great Pyrenees rescue mix :-). This does give us insight into his size, his rear dew claws, his big feet, and his temperament… which is incredibly sweet, loving, and gentle. When he’s not eating everything in sight, including the tire-rubber toy that he ATE and has been yakking up all evening, silly pup.
Oh, and we’ve so far connected with TWO of the families who adopted his siblings!!! A playdate is being planned!!
While you peruse tonight’s Tops, I’ll go check on the pups then join you in the comments!

Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down. There were no comment nominations submitted, alas. Let’s fix that for tomorrow, ok?
