In nineteenth-century New York, abortion was shrouded in secrecy and stigma. But, for Madame Restell (Ann Trow Summers Lohman ) there was no such thing as bad press.
— this follows a survey of women in the state finding two in five respondents suffered from chronic pain.
In more than 700 cases over five years, Georgia reported inadequate housing as the sole reason for taking a child into foster care, a WABE and ProPublica analysis found. Advocates say it would be cheaper to help families get housing. (ProPublica, January 18)

TheConversation Research: Dancing is good for the workplace.
...research shows recreational dance can actually improve productivity performance in the workplace…. It is well known that engaging in physical activity has many health benefits … a lack of physical exercise can result in lower earnings, and lower probability of finding employment or even being invited to interview….
...Dance is special. Neuroscience and psychology researchers have [discovered] the positive health effects of dance [and] that dancing has additional benefits compared to other forms of physical exercise. Cognitive psychologist – and dancer – Peter Lovatt explains that dance is a cognitive activity that engages the brain through learning dance routines, processing music and thinking about rhythm and coordination.
...And while there have been no specific studies on the economics of dance, research tends to relate cognitive skills to higher wages and productivity.
And so … we believe dance can also improve productivity in the workplace. [Here’s how we tested it out...}
And from Medscape
...research ... suggests dance can be beneficial for ... overall health. A 2017 meta-analysis found that dance significantly improved body composition, blood biomarkers, and musculoskeletal function. Other research has linked dance with improvements in cognitive function, mental health, and quality of life.
What makes dance special? It's a full-body workout that might be easier to stick with than other exercises [because of the enjoyment people get from it. Most think of it as a hobby they like, not exercise they have to do. There are countless kinds, fun group classes for every level from beginner to advanced, for entire families or singles (not couples alone), often at community centers and health clubs, and any hour of the day and into evening, as well as clubs and other places for social nights out. Dance is do’able virtually lifelong, from childhood to old age, even adapted for the upper body, for those who develop lower-limb mobility issues. Dance is for just about every body.]

From Independent: Over 64k rape survivors became pregnant across 14 US states after Roe Vs Wade overturned
...Combing through multiple government records, including those with the FBI and the Bureau of Justice Statistics, researchers found that approximately 520,000 vaginal rapes occurred* between 1 July 2022 and the start of this year across 14 US states that banned abortion, and around 12.5 per cent of those rapes resulted in pregnancy…. according to a study published on Wednesday in Jama….
...Millions of people in the US report being affected by sexual violence every year with half of all women and a third of all men facing sexual violence involving physical contact, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)….
In the 14 states that have banned most abortions ... researches have estimated that “519,981 completed rapes were associated with 64,565 pregnancies during the [four] to 18 months that bans were in effect,” according to the study.
“[The rape and pregnancy figures] compared with the 10 or fewer legal abortions per month occurring in each of those states indicates that persons who have been raped and become pregnant cannot access legal abortions in their home state, even in states with rape exceptions,” researchers said.

From inside a Tehran prison: Nobel Peace Prize laureate: The time has come to recognize gender apartheid as a crime against humanity
Today unimaginable crimes against women are occurring in Afghanistan and Iran — witnessed and observed by the world — and yet met with impunity. Inhumane acts committed in the context of an institutionalized regime of systematic oppression and domination by one gender group over another are termed gender apartheid. As was seen with racial apartheid in South Africa — the imposition of a system of apartheid not only results in inter-generational political, social and economic consequences, but also leads to physical and mental harm. This is why it is imperative that gender apartheid is recognized as a crime against humanity. Just as the international community came together to condemn and criminalize racial apartheid in South Africa, they need to do the same on the basis of gender.

Brazil Indigenous women filmmakers form collective, using cameras to fight for rights
While the name Katahirine seems like it could be for an observatory or some ambitious outer space project, it is rather the name of the first audiovisual network created and run by Indigenous women in Brazil.
In the language of the Manchineri people native to Brazil’s state of Acre, Katahirine means “constellation.” It was chosen by the collective because it implies plurality, the gathering of voices from many territories under one platform….
