Just when you thought Pat Robertson might be slinking into the background after the enormous backlash over his fatwa against Hugo Chavez, he's back and crazier than ever.
As has been diaried
here,
here, and
here, the citizens of Dover, PA voted out the entire Republican-controlled school board responsible for pushing Intelligent Design in the school district's science classes.
Pat Robertson apparently had a chat with the Lord about this setback to the theocratic cause, and has come back with this message for the people of Dover:
I'd like to say to the good citizens of Dover. If there is a disaster in your area, don't turn to God, you just rejected Him from your city. And don't wonder why He hasn't helped you when problems begin, if they begin. I'm not saying they will, but if they do, just remember, you just voted God out of your city. And if that's the case, don't ask for His help because he might not be there.

This is just the most recent in a long list of shocking statements by Pat Robertson and others like him on the theocratic right, who claim to speak for the God they obviously know very little about. We all remember Pat's theory on Katrina (that God was punishing NOLA for Ellen Degeneres), his fervent prayer that God would take another Supreme Court justice so Bush could appoint a Puritanical nightmare to the high court; and the list goes on and on.
I for one am proud of the citizens of Dover for standing up to theocrats like Pat Robertson and demanding a proper science education for their children. As more citizens across the country follow Dover's example of rejecting back-door creationism, hopefully Pat Robertson's message will be seen for what it is: the crazed ravings of a lunatic.
