What Are You Reading Right Now
Sat May 10, 2008 at 08:39:46 AM PDT
After cleaning my room yesterday and finding that I'm simultaneously reading 9 different books, I decided perhaps it was time to focus on just one at a time, even if that is so much less fun. So I'm wondering what everyone else is reading right now and if they have any good recommendations. There are few things I love more than recommending a good book to someone and hearing that they have read it, and I can assure you that when I get a recommendation, I often read it almost immediately. I read way too much for my own good (about two books a week), but I have found few better ways to keep learning in this post-college life of mine :)
Anyways, I've listed the books I'm reading now and a whole bunch of my favorite books below the fold (couldn't resist). I'd love any ideas for new ones, because I'm finding myself re-reading favorites far too often recently.

Mojo Friday + What Are You Reading, Vol. 82
Fri Apr 25, 2008 at 07:30:40 AM PDT
What are You Reading is a weekly dailykos series hosted by plf515. Mojo Friday is a feel-good chatty diary hosted by TexDem. I am pleased to guest host this combined edition. I believe both regular authors will return next week.
cfk hosts Bookflurries on Wednesday evenings - Atlantis was this week's theme. Although I am still very fond of the dragons from two weeks ago.
Goodreads is a place to keep track of your reading, and share with friends. Beware of emails from authors though ;-), some seem to email the entire community to request "friendship". My uid there is Jlms, and I will be your friend.
Two weeks ago I overwhelmed myself (and perhaps some of you) with a plethora of beloved children's books. This week is completely different, I promise.
Please share what you are reading, and over the flip, I'll share what I'm reading, why I'm reading it, and how to acquire books.
Bush wants to throw our children under the bus!
Thu Apr 24, 2008 at 06:54:09 AM PDT
This is my first diary, and in my mind, an important one (not that any of the others aren't...)
How important is learning how to read fundamental to the success of any human being? How fundamental is learning to read essential for the success of our children? Seriously, is it even necessary to ask such questions? According to the National Institute for Literacy:
Reading is considered in the Reading First section of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 to mean "a complex system of deriving meaning from print that requires all of the following: (a) The skills and knowledge to understand how phonemes, or speech sounds, are connected to print; (b) The ability to decode unfamiliar words; (c) The ability to read fluently; (d) Sufficient background information and vocabulary to foster reading comprehension; (e) The development of appropriate active strategies to construct meaning from print; and (f) The development and maintenance of a motivation to read."
But President Bush doesn’t want our children to learn how to read!!!

PA: Three Mayors Endorse Obama
Wed Apr 02, 2008 at 10:12:32 AM PDT
Caught this kernel of information buried in a local article about the Obama campaign whistle-stop in Reading, PA two days ago. I was surprised that I hadn't heard some of this information previously.

Impact of Obama's Speech : a Bookshop's View
Wed Mar 19, 2008 at 09:51:50 AM PDT
I and a colleague run a used and rare bookshop. On occasion, current events spark interest in certain books, some of which are out of print. Sometimes, it makes signed or first editions collectible, even if the book is in print.
For example, demand for signed books authored by Hillary Clinton increased in demand when she announced she would run for president. Regular 1st editions sell for between $25 and $100 or so (and by sell I mean the prices that actually move the books out the door, not what folks ask for).
But Obama's own books (and other books signed by him) are different.
