Decadence and too much populism: Conservatism traditionally has been, as a philosophy, the idea of preservation of tradition, security, and liberty. Conservatives traditionally put the national interest above the wants of the international community. America grew from the ashes of the Civil War into an industrial power due to a tradition of trade protectionism. It was Conservatives who, at one time, championed the cause of sound money and keeping debt manageable. It was also Conservatives who unified a young nation through a system of public credit. The business of Republicanism was the business of a sound economy, leaving social legislation up to the states.
