Fabiano Caruana (9/14) of the United States defeated Alexander Grischuk (6.5/14) of Russia to win the FIDE Berlin Candidates Chess Tournament and earned the right to meet Magnus Carlsen to contend for the World Championship title.
In a hard fought match that was even through the first time control Caruana eventually exploited weaknesses in Grischuk’s structure to a win by resignation on move 69.
Caruana will be the first US FIDE representative since the (in)famous Gata Kamsky in the early 90s.
