Mitch McConnell is seeing green. Yep, today the Senate Minority Leader announced his enthusiastic support for Kentucky's legislative effort to add the versatile industrial hemp crop to its farmers' cash and rotation crop options stating:

I am convinced that allowing its production will be a positive development for Kentucky’s farm families and economy.

Having worked on this issue for over a decade, it appears we are nearing the tipping point on efforts to re-legalize hemp farming in the US - the world's largest market for its many products, running the gamut from food to clothing to building materials to car parts, and yet the crop's largest prohibitor. As an Obama supporter I am deeply troubled by recent developments on the national drug policy front - cannabis in particular. Statements by the President in a new Rolling Stone interview and his administration are becoming more and more surreal amidst reality and action on the ground.

On his final day to act on bills, California's Governor Brown shamelessly vetoed SB 676 (Leno) - Industrial Hemp Farming Act. Even though the bill was specifically designed to withstand federal preemption and intervention, Brown hid behind the fear of federal prosecution of farmers as his justification for his weak-kneed veto. This despite Vote Hemp's, co-sponsor of the bill, commitment to haul the feds into court to ensure there could be no federal enforcement of the Controlled Substances Act over California farmers growing hemp under SB 676.

Yet another spineless move by a moderate Dem.

With Kamala Harris (D) leading Steve Cooley (R) by just over 30,000 in the epic vote count to determine California's next Attorney General, the campaigns are engaged in heated exchanges over provisional ballots.

It's coming down to a sleazy attempt by the Cooley camp to eliminate as many provisional ballots as possible in Los Angeles County where Cooley lost by 14%.

The Harris camp, feeling cautiously optimistic with its slight edge, is countering with charges of voter disenfranchisement.

The odds are increasing this race will be decided in court.

Following up on ArthurPoet's Saturday update, Kamala Harris' (D) lead over Steve Cooley (R) swelled to 31,000 Monday night:

Kamala D. Harris (Dem) 4,138,170 46.0%
Steve Cooley (Rep) 4,107,173 45.6%

With just under 775,000 ballots left to count, including 156,000 in Los Angeles County where Harris won by 14%, the trends look good indeed for a clean Democratic sweep of California's statewide offices.

Didn't see this posted yet. Good news out of California. Though the race has yet to be called, Kamala Harris (D) has apparently squeaked out a victory over Steve Cooley (R) for California's Attorney General.

This contest has been closely watched, amongst others, by medical cannabis and gay rights advocates.

In spite of recent polls showing support for California's Proposition 19 (Tax and Regulate Cannabis) waning, there is still hope for supporters. And it lies primarily with younger voters (under 35) who favor the initiative 70-30. The question is whether they'll show up on November 2 in numbers significant enough to push the initiative over the top.

13 years ago San Francisco public artist Brian Goggin inspired 100 or so of his friends to turn the exterior of the derelict Hugo Hotel in SF's South of Market District into a surreal sculpture of defenestrating furniture and other household items.

Originally intended as a six month run, Defenestration survives today - though in much need of repair - this despite the SF Redevelopment Agency's recent eminent domain takeover of the building.

The San Francisco Chronicle today ran a front page, above the fold piece on the 2010 California gubernatorial (potential) candidates' opinions on legalizing cannabis. While the opinions themselves aren't so surprising, the fact that a Republican candidate has the most progressive opinion on the subject is.

The citizens of Oakland today overwhelmingly passed, via mail-in ballot, Measure F - a first of its kind 1.8% local sales tax on medical cannabis sold at the city's four medical cannabis dispensaries.

This Tuesday, we'll discover the results of Oakland's mail-in ballot including Measure F - a 1.8% tax on the gross receipts of all cannabis related business within the city's limits. This is only the latest effort in which Oakland has led the way in California and the nation on evolving cannabis business and policy. But what's to make of this new effort? Will it really bring relief to Oakland's bottom line? Or is it more symbolic?
