Dear New Readers,
Daily Kos has been in the news lately, and you are one of thousands who are visiting our site for the first time. Maybe you are a little skeptical of what you hear on CNN and Fox News. Maybe you are just curious what these blogs are all about. In any case, welcome!
Daily Kos is a community of writers, thinkers, and jokers with an interest in politics. Each of us writes, thinks, and jokes about whatever interests us, then everyone else writes, thinks, & jokes about whatever that person said. There's a system of ratings and recommendations that you will figure out later, that lets the community vote on who is saying the most interesting things.
To get you started, here are the answers to some frequently asked questions. And I've collected a few samples of our writing, thoughts, and jokes for you below.
There's a lot to read here, but these diaries may be a good place for you to get started:
Here's one about the editor of this site, Markos, and his relationship with the Dean campaign -- the story that is getting some press and probably brought you here to begin with.
Here's an article with some polling and analysis of the race for DNC chair, one of the hot areas of speculation in these parts.
Here and here are analyses of Democrats' prospects in every Senate race in 2006. One of the things that has kept me coming back to this site is the deep, wonkish level of political discourse you will find here.
Here is the latest in a series of articles by a community regular, who writes about how liberals and progressive can better frame the debate by their choice of words (things like pro-choice rather than pro-abortion, to use an obvious example). His insights are a little more subtle. The rest of his series can be found here.
Here's an example of the sense of humor people have around here, playing off the recent Armstrong Williams scandal & the Kos/Dean non-story.
Finally, here's a post from a couple weeks ago about Daily Kos itself -- who the community is, where it came from, and what each of us would like to see it become.
Stick around for a bit, read a bit, and if you find that you learned something, think about staying on! Glad to have you here, and enjoy your visit.
Best regards,
empty
p.s. in the collaborative spirit of Daily Kos, let me highlight this comment below, where a reader like yourself has provided links to local writers who have each posted a series of diaries each addressing a single topic of special importance. One of my favorites that he points out is a Daily Kos writer called Pastor Dan who leads a little Bible study here - but please browse for yourself.
