One Pissed Off Liberal has a
wonderful and moving diary tonight on the history and tragedy of the Viet Nam war. This began as a comment to that diary but evolved into a need to ask for help in creating action.
When are we going to get off our asses and into the streets? Peace demonstrations in the 60's and 70's played a huge part in bringing the Viet Nam war to an end. Is there really any reason why the insane occupation of Iraq and Bushco's plans for similar adventures in Iran cannot be stopped in the same way?
We can sit here in relative comfort for eternity pecking little mutually congratulatory notes to one another and pulling at each other's heartstrings and saying noble things, and we should certainly cherish and continue the good work done here.
But, meaningful action akin to the massive anti-war demonstrations of the Viet Nam era would put additional enormous pressure on Bush and Cheney to bring their for-profit occupation of Iraq to an end and would mightily discourage their emerging plans for Iran. A half million people on the mall in D.C. could not be ignored and would send a very clear message to the chickenhawks and to the rest of the world that a huge percentage of Americans (all rational Americans) have had it up to here with Bush and Cheney's war.
If nothing changes, nothing changes.
The liberal/progressive blogosphere seems an excellent place to begin organizing a massive end-of-summer protest demonstration (remember that word???). I lack the knowledge and experience to know anything more than to ask for help, so I'm here to do just that.
Anyone with experience from those critical days in the 60's and 70's or with a knowledge of how to plan and organize a significant peace demonstration can indicate the same below. It is definitely way past time, and I'd love to see something that cannot be ignored actually happen.
Note to DHS/NSA/DIA/CIA monitors of Daily Kos: The author (whose full name and family lineage, address, phone number, occupation, income, political affiliation, medical history and codpiece size are undoubtedly all known to you), is advocating only lawful and peaceful assembly and expression of opinion in the exercise of rights guaranteed by the United States Constitution. In the event such rights no longer exist pursuant to presidential signing statement classified for national security reasons, I'll leave the front door unlocked so that you can just stroll on in instead of breaking it down. I'll be going to bed shortly however, so please permit me a decent night's sleep before breaking down the door to haul me away.
