Chris Hayes asked Texas state Sen. Wendy Davis whether she would run for governor. Her answer was a challenge to all of us who would love to see it so:
I would be lying if I told you that I haven't had aspirations to run for statewide office. I love this state, and it has been an incredible opportunity to represent it in the Texas Senate. I think the real story will be, will the sentiment of people hold. Will they demonstrate their desire for new leadership in the state.
If yesterday was any indication, I think chances are pretty good that that's going to be the case.
Davis wants to run for governor, the only question is whether she'll be able to rally a big enough movement to propel her in what would undoubtedly be a tough battle.
Texas is red, but it is red because our base groups in the state don't vote. Given the crazed actions of the state legislature, not just on women's rights, but also on denying its residents billions of dollars in federal money for health care, the opportunity is there. There is a major effort in Battleground Texas to activate those moribund progressive base voters. Demographic changes move the needle just a little bit closer to the Democrats every single year.
Texas will be purple in 2024 on the strength of demographic changes alone. Increased base Democratic performance would accelerate that a cycle or two. Hillary will certainly make Texas purple in 2016. But who wants to wait even that long? Davis was already competitive in the polls before people realized she existed. That has changed literally overnight.
