So what did you do last Saturday? We hiked in to swimming holes again.
On our hike in to get to our swimming holes we passed by some of that equipment left over from hydraulic mining that occurred around here between 1853 and 1877. This first pic shows you the width of the wheel that moved a large flat-strap pulley. They not only used water to dissolve the sides of mountains and move dirt and rock into sluice boxes, but also made their own hydroelectric plants at some sites. As you can see by smileycreek's outstretched arm providing a sense of size, the width of this huge wheel is at least 16 inches across!
This pic below shows you where water shot out as it was channeled to go through cast iron pipes that were riveted together. The water coming from this point then moved fins on this part of the axle of the huge wheel. They've been broken off, but you can easily tell where they were...aligned directly in front of a pipe that came from the opening in the background.
Here my hand is resting against the shaft of the wheel. As you can see the width of my four fingers together...measuring 3 1/2 inches across...don't cover quite half of the shaft. This shaft made of solid iron has to have a diameter of more than 7 inches.

These pictures are from an area quite a bit up river from the iron wheel we hike past. This area is where they dammed up the river to then send water through riveted iron pipes that led to the hydraulic water nozzles and rotating wheel works down river. You'll see three pictures of metal pieces that were once part of some kind of dam structure including a large piece of a metal beam sticking out of cement. This all came crashing down from where it was built into the side of a cliff.
The bottom two pics show a concrete structure that was part of this dam across the river from the metal parts. I wonder what it looked like.
The two pictures below show a mass of granite boulders that tumbled down from the mountain side right across from the concrete structure. Smooth granite rocks were actually cracked and broken from the force. I suspect these rocks came down because the mountain side was compromised from the water that backed up from the dammed up river.
Back to our swimming holes. This first area we swim has several medium to smallish swimming holes and is collectively called "the teacups." This is where we start swimming around after our hike in. The water was perfect. It was so warm we could swim as long as we wanted without getting cold.
We call this "maui" due to all the layers of green in the water. It's one large swimming hole found directly up river from "the teacups." We have to climb over those boulders to get to it.
