Is political activism less now then in the last few decades
Maybe it is. Maybe. Or maybe you just feel that way because you're tired? Maybe you feel that way because you've been told to feel that way? Maybe you just feel that way because you're not connected with youth who don't share your ennui?
Sunday night I was chatting amicably with a police officer at work. When he left I said to a co-worker, "Seems like a friendly guy."
She replied without emotion, "I don't like cops."
I didn't ask why. This is the always optimistic and very outgoing black girl who is friends with my son. She was raised by grandparents due to her parents living on the streets.
"Well" I said, I grew up with a friend who went into law enforcement-as did his three brothers. Then again, I've been beaten up a number of times by police."
"You? YOU? What for?"
"For political activism."
"Politcal acti...yeeeaaah (with a deep and extremely low sigh of happy righteousness)." That's the most important thing. My respect for you just...."
I then had to turn further away as she spoke due to the embarassed honesty betrayed by the sudden lowering of her voice, as well as my own fear of blushing.
Anecdotal, right? Except I keep running into anecdotes. Like later that night, after closing when the same girl bought a blanket for the homeless man sleeping by her car.
I felt that sigh myself a couple of years ago. I felt here on DKOS. I felt it at two in the morning while reading a thread talking about the then relatively new occupy movement's seizure of Oakland's central plaza. I was reading about developments, when suddenly kossacks began posting that the police were moving on the plaza and arresting folks. There were several kossacks there.
Sigh. Tears flowed from my eyes thinking of friends, allies, and strangers who were now being removed with force and suffering God knows what. I posted my shock and disbelief, and at 4 in the morning I was going off to join them. When I got there I had to walk blocks past police officers, squad cars, and other assorted vehicles. The first occupier I saw was also a black teenage girl. She was shouting instructions at a group of protestors who had let the police turn them back from the barricades. "Come back, they won't be able to hold this line forever." They went back. This relatively old man went with them. And there I was at the barricades again.
So I don't believe that today's youth doesn't appreciate political activism. I'm not buying it. In fact, I've never bought that line. Now I'm less prepared then ever to tolerate that zombie lie from the pit of apathetic defeatist hell for the canard it is. Okay, that was kind of strong. I won't bite off anyone's head who disagrees. Especially not here in New Day. We don't bite heads off here. In fact, if you disagree I'd like to hear why. Then I'll tell you why you're wrong. Heh.
