What's your favorite sport?
I'm not necessarily a big sports fan, but did spend many hours when younger playing a variety of sports. Probably was best at handball. Played it using a small very hard rubber ball. Had to wear gloves because that damn solid ball was so dense. I kind of lost my head over the game for a couple years. In my innocence I thought using a solid rubber ball was hardcore compared to the slightly larger and hollow ones. Heh. I didn't know from hardcore.
Two historical Maya kings face off.
Some other folks used to play with a solid rubber ball as well, but at least ten times the size of the one I played with. Sometimes the captain of the losing team, or rarer, the entire losing team, would literally lose their heads over it. Decapitation. Spectators would gamble ferociously, even to the point consigning themselves to slavery if they lost the bet.
Maya illustration showing gear worn by players.
Those folks consisted of many first peoples here in the Americas living in broad swath of territory that stretched from deep into Central America into possibly as far north as Arizona. It was played for 2,800 years preceding the arrival of Europeans here, and an altered version is still played by some inidgenous people. It is called the
Mesoamerican ballgame.
Balls could weigh up to 9 pounds. As if that's not hardcore enough, hands and feet weren't allowed to touch the ball. Yeah. Playing this game required a lot of padding for the hips and knees. All the courts had long narrow alleyways for the ball to bounce off. Many had stone hoops that must've been damn hard to knock the ball through.
Chichen-Itza had the grandest of all the ballcourts. Note the stone hoop the winning shot had to go through at center top.
This was a brutal game, though not as brutal as some 'games' elsewhere in the world (
Hey Romulus, will the unarmed Christians or the lions win today?). Players could range from commoners to elites to kings. The ritual aspects of the game varied greatly among the different cultures that employed it, but it seems to always have carried religious symbolism wherever it was played. I've seen reenactments, but sure would've enjoyed seeing one of the original versions, and watching the crowd's reactions.
That's my favorite sport. It isn't for lightweights like me. What's yours? Ever gamble too heavily on it?

by peregrine kate ♥ for Motor City Kossacks
A polar vortex could not stop six Motor City Kossacks from getting together on January 4th. Kudos, all! ACA Daily Kos celebrity, Brainwrap attended and brought the group up to date on his work.
Even folks from the White House are quoting his figures now. He also observed how odd he thought it was that the mainstream media (and governmental) sources were 1) not talking to him directly, seemingly content to take his numbers as valid, and 2) not conducting similar statistical aggregations on their own. We shared his astonishment, but agreed that he is doing an important job.
Also in attendance were prolific diarist BFSkinner, user ID 162795 and has been around since long before 2008. Amber6541, famous pootie/woozle diarist with an old user ID of 157580 and sydneyluv, who beat them all with the user ID of 132330. Long timers, these three!
Discussion included Michigan's crucial statewide elections in 2014 and the need to displace Rick "the Nerd" Snyder.
As hosts for upcoming NN14, the Motor City Kossacks are ready for their first meeting with the NN14 staff this January 9th. peregrine kate expressed the need to hear from as many politically radical, grass-roots organizers in Detroit during NN14 as possible and coalesce all this collective energy. All who attend this early meeting will get to shape the agenda. Please kosmail peregrine kate to attend this important event.
Here's one photo:
