How do People Stereotype You?
No matter your age, sex, size, race or origin people are making snap judgments about you. It's what we do-- we put people into categories; we stereotype them. An interesting exercise in mindfulness is to watch the first thoughts that pop into your head when you first see or meet someone new, then set that reaction aside and find out what they're really like.
Sometimes they're positive stereotypes. I tend to automatically like short slender guys who wear glasses-- always have. Even married one. I think Leonard on Big Bang Theory, the 5'4" spectacled dentist in the office behind me and Ezra Klein are all adorable. I tend to think guys like that are also funny and smart until they disappoint me by saying something bigoted or stupid.
Sometimes they're negative stereotypes. I instantly think that men with scraggly mullets are dumb-asses. But one time the mullet-guy turned out to be a hysterically funny brilliant grad student with a bad haircut. It pays to look closer.
Online we judge people by their user names. When I signed up on this site I didn't use my usual screen name because it identified me as female. I wanted a gender-neutral name because I assumed people would take me less seriously as a female, so I took the name of our back yard creek. Now I'm taken less seriously because I'm assumed to be happy all the time...go figure. (/snark)
I've been stereotyped first as a female and second as a blonde all my life. During my 15 years as an X-Ray tech I dressed the same as pretty much everyone else on night and weekend shifts. Blue scrubs, white lab coat with deep pockets and comfortable shoes. Male technicians dressed the same would be hailed by patients as "doctor," while the same patient trying to get my attention would call me "nurse" or "miss." Nothing rude or disrespectful, just a different set of assumptions. It happens in our private practice. Neither of us are M.D.s or presents ourselves as such. We always introduce ourselves by our first names, but older patients in particular will tend to call paradise50 "doctor," or "Doctor S__" while I'm still addressed by my first name. I don't take it personally-- it's an older generation thing.
As for being blonde...well, it's not typically associated with being particularly brainy or sharp. I won't rattle off my academic degrees and awards here because I don't take that one personally, either. I know lots of blonde jokes. Years ago a friend secretly slapped an orange bumper sticker on my car that I just loved that read:
¡qɯnp ʇou ǝɹɐ sǝpuoןq
Sometimes the stereotype works in my favor. I can "pull a blonde" when it works for me, as in getting out of speeding tickets. Been pulled over five times for speeding and no tickets. I get all wide-eyed and apologetic and say "sir" and "I'm sorry sir" every few words and if possible work up a little moisture in my eyes and they've let me off with a warning every time. I't's a sincere apology, too; I'm genuinely sorry I got caught.
Now as I'm entering my cronehood I can see a whole new level of stereotyping beginning to take place. Older women know what I'm talking about. It can cut both ways. Professionally I'm taken more seriously. Years of experience mean a lot in my field. But there's downsides as well. I'll be honest, sometimes when I'm eyeballing that cute short brainy guy with glasses and realize he's not eyeballing me back I have to remind myself I'm old enough to be his mother. I'll probably never get used to that one!
So-- how do people stereotype you? Does it bother you?
What automatic assumptions do you make about people around you?
