A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.

Do you ever like to gamble?
I'm really not a gambler. Gambling comes in all forms from betting on sporting events to betting you'll get away with something illegal without getting caught. The truth is everything we do practically is a gamble. Even driving, when you think about it, is a gamble.
How many folks do you know who bought a home in the mid-2000's only to be stuck now with something under water? Tale of woe in my very local area ---> one neighbor lost his home to foreclosure due to spending all his accrued equity while home prices went up and up. The bubble burst and he suddenly owed way, way more than his home was worth. Other neighbors are trying to sell their home and have been for 9 months. They keep dropping the price and yet no offers.
It's a great home too. All upgraded, three acres of wooded land, year-round creek on a dead-end road. An ideal home IMO. They keep dropping the price. The current price they are asking for now means they'd take a loss of around $100,000 if it sells, and still no offers. It's a great opportunity for someone to buy now after all the improvements they've made including building a work shop, but for them it's ended up being a poor investment after having lived there for nine years.
Well, when you live in a capitalistic country completely controlled by Wall Street and banks that are too big to fail, everything you invest in is a crap shoot because time itself is a gamble. Bubbles are set up on purpose and you never really know when they'll pull the rug out from under you.
~~~~~~~~~~
I've never been to an NDN casino. There are two here in Butte County, CA where I live. They have really good entertainment that rolls through. I mean top notch music and stand up comedians that you'd only expect to be able to see in urban areas. One NDN casino here is known for their excellent food. Folks go there just to eat since they serve food you simply can't find anywhere else unless you drive to San Francisco.
I don't bet on sports games. I don't bet on the horses. I've never watched a horse race live. I don't play Keno. I don't play Bingo. I don't buy lottery tickets, although I probably should a couple times a year just because, you know, you never know. The people I see buying scratchers and lotto tickets at stores makes me think I absolutley need to keep away from such activities. These folks look so desperate and spend too much money on the chance of winning a prize that is 1,000,000 times less likely than getting hit by a meteor.
I like poker. I really like poker. I'll always play poker. I'm willing to gamble on poker.
I used to drive from Colorado to California all the time. As I went through Nevada, I'd stop in either Elko or Winnemucca to gamble for a short while. I'd normally play craps for 15-20 minutes to make enough money to buy lunch and a tank of gas. That was it. I'm certain I succeeded doing that 80% of the time too. My limit was losing $20. If that happened I left. In craps you just wait until things go your way which they will as long as you don't make any side bets. You either bet with the shooter of the dice (Come) or against the shooter of the dice (Pass Line). If you stay to just this strategy, the house only has about a 3% advantage. Knowing that you just wait until you eventually make a few bucks then split and buy a tank of gas to get to California.
There is one game I really like and used to gamble play a lot. That game is 7-card stud poker. I love the game. I love that you are playing against others and not the house. I nearly always came out ahead, but even if I lost some bucks I had hours of fun playing. I always had an absolute limit I was willing to lose which was $40.
When I was young I would go into a casino in Reno to play 7-card stud. I liked Reno because it was also a nice little cow town compared to Las Vegas. Las Vegas was just too full of itself and too LA and the lowest bet limits were much higher than in Reno. What I'm saying is Reno was real while Las Vegas was beyond fake and glittery.
I'd get into a game of 7-card stud and lose on purpose for a while so the people at the table would think they had me figured out. Then I'd pounce and clean up for a while. My schtick was up, but it was OK because by then I was up a bunch and would be able to play for hours if I wanted and still walk away a winner in the end. Plus now the others wanted their money back and respected my playing ability. It always made for hours of fun.
The best time to play was between midnight and 6 AM. I dunno why it is, but the real card players came out during those hours. Normal folks went to bed. The only people left in the casino were the true die hard gamblers and the down and out folks with real gambling problems...and the real card players.
If they played 7-card stud in casinos anymore, I'd surely get into a game. Wikipedia says 7-card stud was the most commonly played game until Texas Hold'em came along. Now Texas Hold'em is all they play anymore and I don't like that game at all. Sure, it looks good on TV, but you only have a couple cards while sharing the rest with all the other players. It is NOT anything like playing 7-card stud with each player having all their own cards with three hidden and four up. The best 5 cards you have out of the final 7 is your hand. Oh well, those days are gone.
Do you like to gamble at all?
by John Crapper ♥ for Seattle and Puget Sound Kossacks
On Saturday 10/4/14, the Seattle and Puget Sound Kossacks had the chance to have lunch with Seattle City Council member Kshama Sawant.
...In 2012, Kshama ran as a Socialist Alternative candidate for WA State Legislature and surprised everyone by winning 29% of the vote. The momentum continued in her campaign for Seattle City Council where she boldly ran on a platform of fighting for a $15/hr minimum wage, rent control and taxing the super-rich to fund mass transit and education. In November she defeated a 16-year incumbent Democrat to become the first socialist elected in a major US city in decades.
Kshama Sawant now chairs Seattle City Council's Energy Committee which covers Seattle City Light, alternative energy sources, energy policies and air pollution regulations.
bleeding blue videotaped the address and the Q&A session that followed:
The Dkos Ashevillites got together again to take a break from registering people to vote. A special thanks to Gordon20024, who drove in from Roanke, for providing all the food!
All the attendees went around the table and talked about what they're involved in at Daily Kos. Details about this on each attendee can be read at randallt's diary. Out-of-state special guests were Land of Enchantment and jnhobbs from Nashville! Love that kind of support!
Dkos Asheville is setting a great example of how to Connect, Unite and Act! Kudos to the whole group that is making this team strong!
by susans ♥ for Los Angeles Kossacks
At the monthly meeting of the Los Angeles Board of Airport Commissioners, SEIU, airport workers and Daily Kos (represented by susans and Joshua Bloxom) presented them with a 48,000 signature petition demanding safer working conditions. Also present were representatives of CLUE, Clergy & Laity United for Economic Justice, who submitted a letter of support to the board.
[...]
The SEIU organizers led a short rally outside of the building at One World Way after the meeting. SEIU represents people who do a lot of different jobs at LAX: they work in the terminals as wheelchair pushers, door openers, janitors, various other positions and on the ramp (outside). Some of them spoke at the rally, again in English and Spanish. They asked me to speak, something I was totally unprepared for. I briefly told them about DK and that I would be writing about the event and posting it online.
A special thank you to Josh, who took multiple trains up from Orange County to support airport workers and represent Daily Kos. It was great talking to you and I look forward to another opportunity to spend some time together.
