For My Grandfather Michael Murphy, who worked on the Central Railroad In Jersey City over 100 years ago. Unloading boxcars with a big hook. He and his fellow workers sweltered in the summer and froze in the winter.
2/19/14 Case heard.
Update As of 9/20/14
I still see no news either on nj.com or my Facebook group Spectra Showdown, about the Appeals Court having reached a decision in Jersey City's case/appeal, in order to stop the spectra natural gas pipeline. So there's still hope.
As of 3/27/14; Still, Awaiting Federal Appeals Court Judges Decision, Concerning Fate Of NJ And NYC.
Good, let them take their time. This is a very important decision. It concerns the health and safety of millions of people.
Just Say No, to spectra energy's New Jersey/New York City natural gas transportation pipeline!
The first media news of this case being heard; that I saw, was on Monday, 2/10.
But I was prepared. I've been writing stop spectra diaries for over three years.
Trying to convince someone with the power; to "stop the madness, that is, this spectra natural gas transportation pipeline!"
Anyone could figure out, (especially if they read my diaries or watch the weather in New Jersey, NYC, etc), that New Jersey/New York City areas, are hurricane prone. Islands, Peninsulas, Waterfront Cities, are especially susceptible to high winds, high tides, and violent tidal surges.
Plus, this entire area is a flood zone These spectra people; they're not even, good engineers.

I E-Mailed NJ Gov Christie I Told Him Shut Spectra Energy's NJ/NYC Gas Transportation Pipeline Down
I don't even want to imagine what a tidal surge wave storm like sandy would do to this pipeline! It's only usually placed 3 feet underground, although, sometimes deeper. According to spectra's website.

video is very loud. You might want to turn your sound down.

hurricane sandy floods Hoboken
Densely populated; Jersey City; Hoboken, Manhattan, Bayonne, certainly not the place to put an explosive, high pressure natural gas pipeline.
This is no ordinary pipeline, like the kind that brings gas to homes. It's a transportation pipeline, that is expected to pump 800 million cubic feet of gas a day!
Then, what happens after the 20 yr lease is up? Or after 40 or 50 years?
Does NJ get stuck with another aging pipeline? Like Con Ed just recently did to Hoboken. Con Ed say's they're no longer responsible for fixing any gas pipelines. The town of Hoboken now has to pay the cost.
I know all the NJ news. I read nj.com every day. I've been putting these stop spectra diaries in the comments every day this week. If an article says; Gov Christie, I leave a stop spectra diary.
Jersey City's Mayor Healy says; the spectra pipeline is a big danger to the New Jersey, New York City area and should not be allowed to operate.
The Blast Radius spectra pipeline goes right through the middle of Jersey City And Hoboken! The Proposed Route
The pollution alone; from this pipeline, is bad enough.
I still say, this is a winnable case for Jersey City; other groups and opponents, to defeat spectra and the monster, that they call a gas pipeline. Why else, would there even be an appeals process?
spectra is culpable, they continued to build even though they knew the pipeline was being challenged in Appellate Court.
Continuing to build, was an erroneous business decision on spectra's part. Anyway; spectra doesn't lose, it's a tax write off for them.
The safety of the people in NJ and NYC, is worth more than any amount it would cost to get rid of spectra. Buy them off if necessary. The State of New Jersey Can Afford it.
Besides everything else, this is a total rip off. We've been robbed!
Endangering the lives of millions of people, for a measly $2.27 million dollars! In NJ they call that, "chump change."
Actually only $1.24 million profit. The other $1.3 million is a bond in case of an environmental disaster caused by the pipeline.
Just give spectra back their $2.27 million dollars, lease and bond money. That is a nothing amount, to the State of NJ.
[lease six lots for 20 years. Additional state-owned land would be needed during the pipeline’s construction phase as well. spectra will pay New Jersey $862,721, total, in rent; $65,809 for temporary work space during the construction phase of the project; and $1.3 million to offset any “permanent ecological, environmental, and recreational impacts” of the pipeline to the area. Hudson Reporter 2012]
I've been documenting and researching the spectra pipeline since I first saw Mayor Healy fighting it several years ago.
How can Jersey City lose, when there are laws? For starters, no one can override, or even compromise the Historic Preservation laws
Even if they do try and challenge the environmental ones. They really can't do that either.
These judges could go with spectra; but when all the fish disappear from here to Delaware and further, when all the fishermen are chasing them, they won't be so popular? Just an observation.
Natural gas pipelines are prone to high risk of leaks that are released as fine mists of toxic spray.
We've got a big mess environmentally here in America and it's time for our Courts to stand up and say; NO, to big energy!
