A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.

Did You Ever Take the Train ?
We did, last summer. We took the Amtrak from Tucson to L.A. It wasn't all that comfortable, but it wasn't all that bad either. You have to learn to sleep in your chair, not such a difficult thing really, ask any geezer. But when you arrive you're a lot fresher than you would have been had you driven for 6 or 8 hours. When you take the train to Los Angeles you arrive at Union Station which is an Art Deco masterpiece. Trains are coming and going but you just want to walk around and check it all out, maybe imaging glamorous travelers in days gone by. Right across the street is Olvera Street, supposedly the remains of the original Spanish colonial city and OK I guess, in a touristy kind of way. From Union Station you can take trains to places all over the L.A. metro area. We took a train up to Pasadena to catch a Meet-Up with the L.A. Kossacks.
That train trip got me thinking, about a couple of things. One, I'd like to maybe take the Coast Starlight sometime, from L.A. to San Fran. They say you have to take it both ways to see the cool ocean views, which I would certainly do. The other thing I thought about was the whole Car Culture.
I mean, is the Car Culture over ? I grew up in the Car Culture, see the U.S.A. in your Chevrolet and all that. Is that gone ? Gas was cheap then. Even "blue collar" jobs paid enough to buy a new car every three years. Now I guess they sell cars on the 5-year plan, and a lot of people never own their cars at all, they lease them. Younger people don't seem all that interested in cars or Hot Rods or the Drive-In Movies. They seem more willing to use public transportation like trains. Of course, our 'Murcan trains are way behind the rest of the developed world. They've all got these High Speed trains that would make train travel a lot more doable even out here in the west, where the distances are so vast. Tucson to L.A. on a 200 m.p.h. train would only be a little over 2 hours. You wouldn't even need to sleep. I think trains are probably better for the environment too.
That's all I got for today. Cars trips on Monday, trains on Tuesday. How 'bout it CUA-ers,
Did you ever take the train ?

by John Crapper ♥ for Seattle and Puget Sound Kossacks
Organizer John Crapper completed another meet-up, from his agenda:
Next, I updated the group on our efforts to identify campaigns we would like to assist in the upcoming elections. There are three that have been under active discussion but nothing has been firmly decided. We all agreed it was important to pick races that would help Washington Democrats regain control of the Senate.
Next, I asked for ideas, suggestions and assistance identifying future guest speakers. In connection with that I urged all to invite their friends to become Kossacks and join us to enhance our clout.
Longtime Kossack
LarisaW, President of
Progressive Radio Northwest (PRNW), was in attendance. She is leading an effort to bring back progressive radio to the NW.
