For those who are only interested in the stats, head below the orange thingamabob.
I was going to add six month statistics to this diary, but they'll be published separately - I need a couple of days to play with the figures.
I'm trying something different this month. Rather than try to link diaries during the month and try to keep the topics separate, I'm going to try separate lists - of women's issues diaries, to start - on different topics, at the end of the monthly review.
July breezed in on the news that the Supreme Court had finally gone batshit crazy in several different directions. Lots of diaries, but very little meta or pie, about both the decision to rescind the abortion clinic buffer zones in Massachusetts, and, ahem, Hobby Lobby. A new set of trolls descended to say silly things in the Hobby Lobby diaries, but were generally not organized nor very intelligent.
On the 3rd, kos reported again on the state of the state - evidently DK is doing even better than he thought. On the 8th, we have ExpatGirl's musing on the general quality of current trolling, with specific reference to the Hobby Lobby crowd.
For the next week or so, we had an uptick in Israel/Palestine diaries, and also in GMO/Labelling/Monsanto arguments. An occasional slice of pie was thrown, and the number of debatable HRs went up slightly in the first, as did the accusations of shilling in the second.
July 14 - It is impossible to track HRs and avoid the I/P diaries. If there is an uptick this month, that is where they will come from. As the current conflict around Gaza has gotten worse, so has the proliferation of Nazi/Holocaust references. Perhaps I should offer a prize for pithy new comparisons, if only to give people an incentive to be more creative in their insults.
July 19 - I/P is really, really strange. It's been suggested that part of the problem is that staff is tied up at NN. The oddest thing to me is how few of the comments with HRs are actually hidden, though I haven't tracked individual comments' status as to whether they were hidden first and then uprated out of the hiddens. And either the Nazi/Holocaust references aren't getting HR's for the most part, or there really aren't that many of them. A section in the stats below tracks I/P HR activity for the month.
July 21 - Time to take a short look at the NN/Kos/Arizona kerfluffle, which has spawned at least half a dozen diaries at this point, and looks to keep going for a while. I can't decide whether it's the fight of the century or just a tempest in a teapot, but there certainly are enough strong opinions going around to last for a week or two. Lots of meta, very little pie so far.
July 24-31 - I/P has come fully back to the center of attention. More and more diaries are presenting balanced and nuanced views of the overall situation, but battles in the comments seem to be just as heated, even though not quite as ethnically polarized. The occasional GMO reference continues to attract a moderate contingent.
