Good day and welcome to DKos Asheville. This is the weekly DKos Asheville open thread for Saturday September 27th. We try to get together every weekend to share with everyone what we're all up to in Western North Carolina and beyond. We hope this group serves to invigorate us locally and regionally here on Daily Kos, building on the sense of community that's grown through our online engagement. DKos Asheville can give us all a better sense of connection, a better understanding of who we stand with, work with, and share with. We hope this community can help leverage our orange passion for progressive politics to elect more and better Democrats.
Asheville and all of Western North Carolina are wonderful places to visit. We have a powerful progressive presence, both cultural and political, and for the most part everyone is really nice. And the views are breathtaking. If you've never been here, we promise you'll love it.
As regular readers know, our next meet-up is scheduled for next Saturday October 4th. Jump over the Squiggle of Down Ticket Power for more.

Meet ups can be powerful events for this community. They can provide inspiration, logistical support for campaigning, ideas shared amongst many and of course a reaffirmation that this community is more than just keyboards. It is people, friends and fellow travelers on the road of justice and peace that make this place so special.
Following is an example of this community's impact beyond politics. It's a lot like love.
JaxDem posted this on September 6th:
Otteray Scribe has been in the hospital for a short while, but is now home. He'd begun having difficulty breathing and feeling some chest pressure which was angina. He went to the ER and was admitted..........
OS says he does feel better, but has been sleeping a lot lately and he says his "social calendar" is pretty wide open. I obtained his permission to let you all know and to share his email if you'd like to drop a note wishing him well. His email is: Ottscribe@gmail.com.
Soon after
TexDem wrote me and suggested that we should find a way to go and pick up OS and his granddaughter Burns Lass. I also received a suggestion from
lilbear that we should consider taking the event to Otteray Scribe's place. It turned out not to be workable but still a great idea.
So I wrote OS and offered to pick them up. The exchange below reflected like family. On the list of attendees above I have been referring to OS's daughter as "family". Well her name is Mary Beth. Please join me in welcoming her to Asheville.
Randall, I plan to be there.
Shelby (Burns Lass) is in Canada, but will be coming back in September. She plans to come. She had wanted to come last time, but couldn't.
The important thing is that Mary Beth (Shelby and Reed's mom) is handicapped and never gets to go anywhere. I invited her to come. She was both thrilled and hesitant, but agreed to let me bring her.

Wonderful news! Can't wait to tell navajo and I'll be honored to meet Mary Beth!
___________
Be careful what you wish for. She can talk the horns off a billy goat.

I hope you are feeling strong. I've had an outpouring of goodwill for your health and nerve. I wanted to pass it along with mine. We will be meeting, as I'm sure you know, at the Cantina instead of The Bywater on October 4th. We would love to pick you and yours up and take you home.

Randall,
I am under strict orders to not lift anything heavier than the coffee pot for a while, until that plug in my femoral artery has completely healed. If it were to blow out, that would spoil my whole day.
By the time of the meetup, I think it should be pretty much healed, but I am being extra cautious. I should be able to manage getting her wheelchair in the car at her house, and when we get there, somebody can help me get it out, then back into the car when we get ready to leave.
____________
It sounds like you have a plan to make it, but keep my offer in mind goihng forward, I have a big ole Buick that is really comfortable. It would be an honor come fetch y'all if need be.
____________
Thanks, Randall. I will be driving the Mercury Grand Marquis, so it has plenty of room. The damn wheelchair is the headache. There is only one way to make it insert into the trunk, and still close the lid. It is a bit heavy...not normally...but is when I am under orders to not pick up heavy objects. Shelby is supposed to be coming home from Canada on Monday. She is looking forward to the meetup.
See you soon

Randall,
Yesterday afternoon, I talked with Mary Beth about her coming to the meetup. Told her that on the RSVP list she appears to be listed as "Family guest." She says it is OK with her if you tell everyone a little more, and include the fact that the family guest is "Reed's mom." You could include links to my two diaries about him if you like.

It occurs to me that knowing she plans to be there might just bring a couple more people out that otherwise might not come. I will gather up some photos of him, and make an album for her to bring.
See you on Saturday, have a great week!
