Welcome to the Wednesday Coffee Hour here at Street Prophets. This is an open thread where we can talk about what's going on in our worlds.
Everyone is welcome to discuss all topics of conversation, to post photos, and answer that eternal question: "What's for supper tonight?"
Do you ever wonder what your life would be like if there were no internet at all?
I often wonder how I would spend my day without it. How much harder would my job be? I spend so much time at work reading and writing emails -- I guess I would have to spend a lot of time on phone calls instead and probably playing phone tag a lot of the time.
It's sometimes tempting to think that we save a lot of money because we're able to compare prices online at the different places where we shop. But I don't know if I really save much more than the yearly cost of my internet connection. And because I'm able to find stuff online that I can't find locally, I probably buy things I would just go without otherwise.
I am still friends with people from college who live far away. Would I stay in touch with them if I had to write letters and make phone calls to do it? As much as I value those friendships, I really don't know.
There are blogs and chat rooms related to some of my favorite pastimes: home decor, politics, reading, dogs and cats, cooking, gardening, and travel that I spend hours upon hours reading every day. I sometimes worry that I am spending too much time reading about other people doing things than actually doing things myself. But would I really do more without those websites or would I just spend more time reading books instead?
There definitely are aspects of my current web-dependent life that I would have trouble adjusting to. I cannot imagine having to go back to relying on a travel agent for airfares and tickets.
What would you miss the most if the internet disappeared tomorrow?
According to our much missed BlueJessamine, it's Booby Wednesday and this is a Public Service Announcement: Self exams can save lives!
