The orange pinpoints are the location of each organized group of Daily Kos readers. If you'd like to join a group, click on a point and a box will pop up showing contact links. If you'd like to start a group, contact navajo for instructions.
A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us at Daily Kos every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward. |
Do you like flags ?
I’m starting to get a little bit irritated about flags myself. They’re starting to piss me off. I’m not talking about the flags people throw at each other in comment threads at the Daily Kos. Those are
childish and silly and they irritate me too but that’s not what I’m talking about here. I’m talking about the flag of the United States of America, and where it’s flown and who flies it and why. I’m all for flying the flag where it’s appropriate. I’m glad that we still fly Old Glory down at the courthouse and I’m OK with the flag being flown at the Post Office and the Capitol, and military bases too. And embassies, we should fly the flag at US embassies. In fact, all US government buildings should fly a US flag. But my wing-nut neighbor on the next street ? Please. Does he think I don’t know what country I’m in ? Every time I step out back, there’s his little flag flying in my face. To be honest, I don’t know that he’s a wing-nut or that he’s even a he. I’m just assuming, because that’s usually the type that flies an American flag at their house.
I get in the front too. Every time I step out of my house, front or back, I see the damn flag. Hence the simmering resentment. From my front yard I can see two flags. There’s a major street a few blocks away, running parallel to mine, and on that street are two car dealerships. The Porsche-Audi dealership has a flag and so does a Honda dealership that just moved in a few months ago. They fly a yuuge one. Why do foreign car dealers need a flag, and why don’t they fly the German and Japanese flags ? Some places should have flags and some places shouldn’t. There oughta’ be a law.
Now the Mexicans have the right idea. They’re particular about who gets to fly a flag. They’ve got these giant monumental flags, banderas monumentales, that are manufactured and maintained by the Mexican Army, not some Kia dealership. They fly them in the capitol and at historic locations and ports. I’ve seen the one in Ensenada and I guess they have one in Tijuana too. Check this out, they’re raising the one in the Zócaclo in Mexico City.
Now that is a flag. Eat your heart out Mr. Wing-nut Vet on the next street over.
OK …
That’s all I got for this morning, back by popular demand. Whadya’ all got for me ? How’s it going with your local groups, any new Meet-Ups in the works, any cool links to share ? It’s an Open Thread.

Event Reporting
Northwestern Pennsylvania Kos
Northwestern Pennsylvania had dinner and lively political conversation on the evening of Thursday, March 17 at Latinos Restaurant in Erie, PA, in celebration of a visit from Chrislove who lives in Houston. Gizmo59’s recap can be read in full here, complete with succulent food pr0n.
The SFKossacks welcomed ColoTim on his recent business trip to the Bay Area. We met at the Beach Chalet for a great lunch overlooking the ocean. A zillion more photos here: Connect! Unite! Act! Ferguson, San Francisco & NN16 Event: SFKossacks Welcome ColoTim! Photos!
While we are awaiting the official recap photo diary by JoanBrooker of our New York City meet-up on Sunday, February 28, 2016 with navajo and Denise Oliver-Velez, please enjoy this place-marker group photo. Several attendees were taking photos and we can promise some excellent food pr0n. Stay tuned for Joan’s report. We had a great day that lasted from noon until 8:30 PM! AND HERE IS JOAN’S REPORT: Navajo @ 2/28/16 NYC Meet-up!
Saturday, February 13, 2016, the readers of Daily Kos in North Carolina joined thousands in the 10th Annual Mass Moral March on Raleigh & HKonJ People’s Assembly GET-OUT-THE-VOTE GATHERING AND MOBILIZATION action. Our readers braved 27 degree weather! There were two diaries about it: The march the trolls couldn't stop: NC-NAACP's Moral March on Raleigh, 13 Feb 2016 by DocDawg and North Carolina Open Thread: Marching and Connecting by randallt.
Here’s one photo of many provided by both diarists:
The marvelous NYC Kossacks got together to welcome front pager, Laura Clawson, to NYC. And what a fantastic job they did. Look at all the people who showed up! Full report here.
navajo maintains the above event list. Kosmail her if you have any diaries about your event or if you have changes or additions.
This is an open thread. Nothing is off topic.
