Welcome to the Wednesday Coffee Hour here at Street Prophets. This is an open thread where we can talk about what's going on in our worlds. Everyone is welcome to discuss all topics of conversation, to post photos, and answer that eternal question: "What's for supper tonight?"
I normally sleep with a couple of cats next to me. So, I’m used to being awakened by one of them snoring or growling or purring. But, last weekend, I awoke at around 5 a.m. by the loudest most horrifying scream I’ve ever heard. It sounded like it was just outside my window. I could tell right away that it wasn’t human but I couldn’t imagine what kind of animal it could be. I’ve never heard a cat or dog in that kind of distress. I sat up and looked out my window and couldn’t see where the sound was coming from. I then jumped out of bed and went into the living room to look out the front door. I wasn’t wearing my glasses but I could see an orange and white cat circling around a car that belongs to one of my neighbors that was parked on the street. The cat looked over in my direction and, when it saw that I was looking at it, it took off running. I couldn’t see it that clearly without my glasses but it didn’t look hurt — it wasn’t limping or bleeding or anything like that. I stood there watching it run away and still couldn’t imagine that awful sound coming from a small cat. I just assumed it had attacked some other animal that had made that sound but I couldn’t see any other animal anywhere around there.
Later that same day I saw a message on NextDoor about a fox in the neighborhood. One of the messages in response to the first post about the fox mentioned the fox’s “screaming” and that’s when it dawned on me that what I’d seen was not an orange cat but a fox. I then looked at some YouTube videos of foxes vocalizing and I heard the exact same sound I’d heard that morning. I really hope I never get awakened from a sound sleep by that sound again but, if I ever do hear it again, I will definitely make a point of grabbing my glasses so I can get a better look.
According to our much missed BlueJessamine, it's Booby Wednesday and this is a Public Service Announcement: Self exams can save lives!
