A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us at Daily Kos every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.
If you are new to the site or have been lurking, we invite you to join in the friendly banter here. Don’t be shy, say anything, it will be well received.
I am a Democrat. In fact I was named after Adlai Stevenson, being born just days after my folks voted for him. Expecting a girl, they had to think fast. (I’m happy my first name isn’t Adlai.)
A friend gave me this flicker button a few years ago based on the story of how I got my name. “All The Way With Adlai”
My parents were Democrats, in fact Democrats “Plus”. They were more to the left of the party on most issues social and economic. And they were strongly anti-war. So when the War in Vietnam started to ramp up, out came the old manual typewriter and they started cranking out letters to object to our military involvement there. They sent these off in protest to our hawkish senators at the time, and also to politicians that were anti-war to thank them. Always a carbon copy would be made for their file.
While some feel it’s impolite to discuss politics at dinner or with guests, politics was always a topic anytime. Presidential conventions were required viewing. When a peace candidate arose in 1970 to run the primary against Washington State’s longtime Democratic Senator Henry "Scoop" Jackson, they were all in. Dad turned his artistic skills into silk screening yard signs.
So I was a bit befuddled when I was able to vote for the first time in 1972. Of course, George McGovern was the preferred candidate in our house. But I was surprised by their decision to vote for the re-election of Dan Evans for governor. He was a Republican.
My mother was a state employee at that time, and liked the way he reorganized the Department of Social and Health Services, the agency for which she worked. She gave him her endorsement, and we all went with it. Of course in those days the Republican Party was a pretty moderate bunch, at least in my state. Evans had a good record on environmental issues, and was supportive of higher education, and Evergreen College (home of the fightin’ goeducks) was founded under his administration.
So with this entry, I hereby confess: I voted for a Republican, knowingly and willingly.
It was the last time…
…sort of. In last year’s election we had to pick between 2 Republicans for State Treasurer. That was due as a result of our crazy “top two” primary system. Normally both a D and an R clear the primary hurtle and make it to the general election. But last year, three Dems split the vote between them. (Gotta coordinate better guys! Sheesh.) We had to consult “Seattle’s only newspaper” - The Stranger - for guidance…
…So there was no choice. Not my fault.
I have sinned. How about you, have willingly voted for a Republican when there was a Democrat on the ballot?
Our CUA team is here to provide support and guidance to new and existing volunteer leaders of each regional and state group, helping them with recruiting, organizing and executing social and action events. We invite you to join in this effort to build our community. There are many ways to pitch in. If there isn't a group to join near you, please start one.
