It is a long-standing tradition in this community to reach out to community members who are in distress. For more than a decade, we have posted community diaries during disasters with helpful links, news updates and support. This is what we do at Daily Kos. Because we care about each other.
There are horrendous fires burning up our West Coast. And as our own terrypinder wrote tonight, in the midst of his amazing coverage of the unfolding disaster in Florida, I need someone to put up something about the wildfires.
We do need someone to put up something about the wildfires. And I sincerely hope someone will. But tonight, I am asking for help in providing support for our community members suffering from the catastrophic hurricane approaching Florida.
We have all seen the destruction Hurricane Irma has wrought on tiny Barbuda:
Tonight, this horrifying storm is threatening Cuba and has wreaked havoc on Haiti:
(We will need to organize to help Haiti, too.)
Over the next week, we will be posting check-in diaries for our community members in harm’s way. This, too, is a community tradition. We need to make sure that those in our community who are in harm’s way know that we have their backs, that we support them, that we will help them when they need us.
Many of them will need many of us in many ways in the days ahead.
If you could host a check-in diary, please kosmail me. I and the other organizers of this series will supply any links or assistance you need. And you will be performing an amazing service to those in our community who need to know that we will always be behind them. Always.
Thank you.
