One of the displays in the Burrows House Museum in Newport, Oregon, is called Cars: Motoring the Coast. According to the Museum display:
“Automobiles came late to Oregon’s coast. When the first cars arrived about 1910, the roads were not ready. Road construction speeded up after WWI demonstrated a need for a reliable north-south route and inland access. Better roads brought more visitors to the coast along with new roadside attractions and new towns, like Depoe Bay.”
Shown above is an early photo of cars on the beach.
Shown above are some automotive tools.
Shown above is an early taxi.
Prior to automobiles, stages such as the one shown above, were used for transporting people.
Prior to automobiles, roads were somewhat unimproved.
Cars would sometimes get stuck and have to be pulled free by horses.
Dogs and cars have gone together since the early days of automobiles.
