Thus far it's crickets from Maine Republican Susan Collins, the senator most responsible for Brett Kavanaugh's Supreme Court seat, about his vote to overturn Supreme Court precedent on abortion.
The last word we had from Collins about her decision to champion this guy was that she was feeling "vindicated" because he voted against Kansas and Louisiana defunding Planned Parenthood by withholding Medicaid funding to it. That case didn't touch directly on abortion or a woman's access to abortion, but on health care. Collins’ satisfaction then seemed to be that it was a poke in they eye to Planned Parenthood, a group which had previously been stalwart in the Collins camp because she has been one of very few pro-choice Republicans. "Planned Parenthood was Brett Kavanaugh's No. 1 opponent," Collins said. Planned Parenthood also turned on her, which she seemed particularly peeved by. "They went after him with everything that they had, and yet when it came to this case, he was able to put that aside and rule impartially, independently."
Well, that wasn't what happened when the issue was actually abortion, now was it, senator? Here's what she said about Kavanaugh when she stood on the Senate floor and justified her vote for him. "To my knowledge, Judge Kavanaugh is the first Supreme Court nominee to express the view that precedent is not merely a practice and tradition, but rooted in Article 3 of our Constitution itself. He believes that precedent is not just a judicial policy, it is constitutionally dictated to pay attention and pay heed to rules of precedent."
He lied to Collins when he said that. The proof is in his willingness to overturn Supreme Court precedent that's just two years old, and was decided by his current colleagues. Collins might be a fool, but she's not an idiot. She watched those hearings, and she watched Christine Blasey Ford’s testimony. She saw all of the documented evidence of Kavanaugh's lies and perjury before the Judiciary Committee. She knew he was a liar.
Collins lied to all of us and she lied to her constituents, who are probably getting used to that. No wonder she's keeping her mouth shut now. It's not like we're going to forget, however, and it’s really not likely Maine voters will in November 2020.
