Did anyone else get a distinct whiff of #Thursday today? Why can’t we ever get them all organized to post on Thursday. I blame kos! And Socialism!!! So the rules are out the window tonight cuz brillig is too busy to notice the fresh, piney smell coming from the smoking patio. Tonight, we play gonzo Top Comments.
I don’t know about anyone else, but yesterday was a whacko news cycle for me. Between the issues brought up in my diary from last night and the usual “will they or won’t they” horse racey madness, I actually kind of felt engaged. For at least one news cycle the MSM were talking about reparations. A concept introduced to us by Ta Nehisi Coates of the Atlantic. I really felt that something had shifted through the Overton prism of partisan politics.
Mind you, I didn’t expect this little miracle to last through the next hour. Hey, that wacky Tucker Carlson huh. Whew. NOT going there in this diary. Tonight will be a little gumbo of stuff saved from my Facebook feed. We will talk Title IX, cuisine, history, and little Hip Hop from the female perspective. Get ready to grab a spoon.
But first, a word from our sponsors ...
Here at Top Comments we welcome longtime as well as brand new Daily Kos readers to join us at 10pm Eastern. We strive to nourish community by rounding up some of the site's best, funniest, most mojo'd & most informative commentary, and we depend on your help!! If you see a comment by another Kossack that deserves wider recognition, please send it either to topcomments at gmail or to the Top Comments group mailbox by 9:30pm Eastern. Please please please include a few words about why you sent it in as well as your user name (even if you think we know it already :-)), so we can credit you with the find!
First up is a story that didn’t gain much traction here but the USWNT filed suit against US Soccer to be paid in a manner commensurate with their male peers. For those who don’t do sportsing (ahem, brillig is still on leave), the Women’s team is like super really cool and has won a lot of events. The Men, not so much. Yet the men’s pay far outstrips that for the women.
The lawsuit was filed on #InternationalWomensDay for obvious reasons. The statute in question is Title IX, which I am much too tired to link and source. Just trust me. This is a thing for literally an entire generation of female athletes, the ones coming through jr highs and high schools on their way to college and then life.
So, occasionally, sports and politics overlap. This is one of those times. And in these times, you consult Jemele Hill, here on the teevee for you. She is leaving, or has left, ESPN to take up a gig writing for the Atlantic. Keep an eye on her, non sportsters. It will be worth following her.
Next up is a writer and food historian I was unfamiliar with, despite his recent James Beard Book Award. Trust me. I should have known about him sooner. So now you know about him too. The website is called thecookinggene.com and it is run by Michael W Twitty.
1. What is The Cooking Gene?
The Cooking Gene is the confluence of several major areas of interest that I hold dear–family history, Southern/African American food history, the cultural politics of identity, and intercultural connections and historical legacies.
We are traveling the “Old South,” in search of sites that are a part of my family history in slavery and segregation (plantations, gravesites, cotton gins, tobacco barns, churches, etc.) tracing the larger story of African American foodways through my Black, white and Native American ancestors and their personal stories.
We are attempting to dialogue with the white families who owned my family–some of whom I am related to by blood–using food as the medium of communication and discourse.
We are looking at the development of African American foodways from Africa to America and from the colonial South to the antebellum and postbellum South using my family tree and family geography if you will as a guide.
We’re calling that connection “foodsteps” instead of footsteps to describe those edible connections to the landscape and time.
We will be doing 7 community service projects as part of the project to be established before we get on the road.
We will interview and document the food producing efforts of Black farmers and fishermen.
We will seek out heirloom seeds and wildcrafting and medicinal lore in specific communities.
We will be doing food workshops that bring people of various backgrounds together in the spirit of education and racial (cross-cultural) reconciliation and healing.
We will honor the ancestors of each historic site and family history site by saying prayers, including The Kaddish, and through libation and we invite you to offer any names you want for this process.

Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down.
Note: Please remember that comment inclusion in Top Comments does not constitute support or endorsement by diarist, formatter, Top Comments writers or DailyKos. Questions, complaints or comments? Contact brillig.

from Zen Trainer:
The comment is by cminus. Fun fact: for the longest time, I pronounced this users name as siminus. One day, going over comments on the phone with a friend (We all do that don't we? I mean that's why we have Top Comments), my friend asked me if that was how I saw that name. siminus. Yes, I did. Oddly he read it as c-minus. Welcome to the world of my ADHD brain!

HRH Princess Fuzzy Face Rootie Marie Jackson, Esq.
but she answers to Stinkerbell, Boo Boo Bear, Bumpelstiltskin, and anyone with food.
Her recall is getting better so I can trust her more to run but not run away.
There’s a funny story about her, maybe I’ll share it later.
