Good evening, and a happy Saturday to you! In a bid to avoid nonstop news cycle coverage of whatever outrage is today (or rather, this hour then the next hour, we measure time very quickly in these times) and to act on one of my New Year’s Goals (Get Stuff Out Of The House), Mr. Brillig and I spent several hours collecting all of the old electronic tech accumulated over several decades of living in the same house. You know the kind, the ‘let’s put this in the attic in case we need it again’ and oddly, we haven’t needed a cassette player ever since. That image up top is most of it. But what’s a responsible person to do to get rid of it?! Grab a beverage and step below the Story Break, after a brief reminder of how YOU can be involved in making Top Comments vibrant!
Here at Top Comments we welcome longtime as well as brand new Daily Kos readers to join us at 10pm Eastern. We strive to nourish community by rounding up some of the site's best, funniest, most mojo'd & most informative commentary, and we depend on your help!! If you see a comment by another Kossack that deserves wider recognition, please send it either to topcomments at gmail or to the Top Comments group mailbox by 9:30pm Eastern. Please please please include a few words about why you sent it in as well as your user name (even if you think we know it already :-)), so we can credit you with the find!
I did NOT want simply to dump everything in the trash, obviously. I know that Best Buy takes a lot of items, but going there also isn’t high on my list :). I checked my city Public Works Department page, figuring there might be something useful and what I found was amazing! Thanks to the state Department of Environmental Protection, we have a site called Recycle Smart MA, and it provides a comprehensive list of what can be recycled, and how. Cities and Towns can link to something called the Recyclopedia, and it tells you what to do with Stuff. I searched my City’s Recyclopedia for Electronics, and found this (edited slightly for privacy):
Electronics ($) or E-Waste
The following “home office and entertainment” electronics or E-Waste can be recycled at the DPW Recycling Center (click here for location and hours) for free: cables and wires, cell phones, desktop copiers, CPU’s, DVD players, fax machines, key boards, mice, networking gear, PDAs, desktop printers, radios (communication equip), routers, scanners, servers, stereo equipment, telecom equipment (phones), VCR players and video game consoles.
TVs, computers and laptops can be recycled at DPW for a fee in a few ways. You can schedule a curbside pickup by purchasing a sticker at the Public Works Operations Facilityand placing the item curbside with the sticker on it. You can also drop off it off for a fee during the week at the City Recycling Center or at a Saturday recycling event (click here for the full calendar of Saturday recycling events).
Well hot damn! I can utilize my own city yard to recycle the vast majority of what is sitting on my floor.
But what if someone can use some of it? Because I know some people collect old tech for various reasons, I posted pictures of the major stereo equipment on my Facebook page and in our local Buy Nothing group. So far a VCR has been claimed by a friend looking to transfer old media to new, and Mr. Brillig’s old, much-loved stereo receiver.
We have some other stuff that may be worth something and are working our way through it all. But by the end of next week three crates and several stacks of electronics will have found their way to a safe ending place. An iThing cleanout a year ago saw every old phone and tablet we had turned in for credit on new phones that we desperately needed, but today saw us discover and get rid of ALL the boxes that stuff had come in. OMG, we have some space on our attic shelves, and I’m encouraged to keep clearing stuff out!
How about you, what’s going on in your world tonight? Share in the comments after taking a look at our trio of Top Comments, Mojo and Pictures, NONE of it recycled!!

Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down.
