The presidential election and competitive races for the House and Senate may be generating most of the headlines, but there are many important contests further down the ballot taking place nationwide this year. From mayoral races to district attorney elections and contests for control of county boards of supervisors, 2020 will feature major battles in some of the country’s largest cities and counties.
Below is our calendar of the year’s top races, which we will continually update as new contests are scheduled. Shaded cells reflect dates that have been changed.
A version of this calendar in spreadsheet form, with more details about specific election procedures for each race as well as the population for each jurisdiction, can be found here. For our calendar of congressional and state primaries, as well as presidential primaries, click here.
In California, filing deadlines were extended to Dec. 11, 2019 in races where no incumbent filed for re-election.
