We all watched in dismay as one of the worst people in America, Donald Trump, won the state of Ohio in 2016. Barack Obama had carried the state twice, so it was jarring to watch Hillary Clinton lose it. And, as always, there are the gloomy pessimists who say we have no chance in Ohio. (If you’re one of them, would you please not spread your negativity in the comments?) But you know what?
THIS YEAR, WE’RE GONNA TAKE IT BACK.
How, you might ask? Well, in addition to a powerful media presence aimed squarely at Trump (and promoting our excellent and popular ideas), we’re gonna have a POWERFUL ground game. And where does that start? In the LOCAL DEMOCRATIC AND PROGRESSIVE ORGANIZATIONS. And it just so happens that I have a good sized list, below. The objective is clear: to boost the Democratic turnout in Ohio MASSIVELY. In 2016, Clinton won 2,394,169 votes in the state as opposed to 2,841,006 for Trump. We must assume the MAGATs will be out in force next year, so I’m setting a dramatic goal: An increase in the Democratic presidential vote of 800,000.
Not doable, you say? Nonsense. In 2012 Barack Obama received 2,827,709 votes in the state, which was 50.58% of the vote. Setting a goal of at least 3.2 million votes for the Democratic candidate is in no way unrealistic. The total vote in Ohio in 2016 was 5,536,547. Because there is such high enthusiasm already, I predict a turnout in Ohio of 6 million in 2020. A Democratic vote of 3.2 million would be a little over 53% of that. The grassroots will make it happen!
REMEMBER!! OHIO IS IN PLAY. THE DEMOCRATS CAN CARRY OHIO IF THEY WORK FOR IT.
A Democratic presidential victory in Ohio is not some sort of distant event. It was achieved in 2012. A statewide Democratic victory is not some rare occurrence. It was achieved in 2018. Let me call your attention to this OUTSTANDING Twitter thread from February of this year:
We can DO this. Let’s get to work.
