Happy New Year!
Well, I mean, it’s still new, right? George Santos might say it’s new-ish.
And I have New Year’s resolution not to make Eastern Orthodox jokes. So they’ll be back by about February, I would guess.
It’s “Opening Day” in Congress today, with all eyes on the House, awaiting the outcome of the vote for the Speakership.
Unfortunately, Joan McCarter has got some home repairs scheduled for today. (Here’s hoping she won’t write 2022 on the check.) But we weren’t going to know what was going on in the House until after the show, anyway. So now when we finally do get to talk to her about it, it can be with knowing laughter rather than nervous tittering and nail-biting.
Anyway, we can turn our focus to other subjects if we want to, because we already know what the rest of the world will learn later today: that you don’t actually need 218 votes to become Speaker of the House.
You get news like that days in advance. Seems like the kind of thing that’s worth subscribing to!
If you didn’t give yourself a gift this holiday season, maybe that’s something you want to think about!
