Welcome to Friday’s edition of the There’s Still No Speaker of the House show!
Yes, they’re at it again.
But now I have a new worry about this craziness. Thanks to a question posed to me by Mastadon user Susan Barrett Price, it occurs to me that what might possibly be a pretty good (and legal) way of stopping an electoral vote count on January 6, 2025 or any time in the future would be to… do what Republicans are doing right now.
Of course, the trick only has a shot at working if Republicans have won a majority in the House at the time. Or can plausibly fake it, anyway.
But what if some future January 6th rolls around, and Republicans are once again desperate to stop the counting of the electoral votes, so they engineer exactly this same kind of clown show, and claim that when the appointed time rolls around, there is no “House” to enter into the Joint Session with the Senate for the purpose of counting the electoral votes? And no Speaker to appoint tellers on the part of the House? And for that matter, no one even authorized to invite the Senate into the House chamber?
Hey, Friday’s a great time to have a nightmare! Even if it’s 9:00 in the morning!
