I’ve been writing here at Top Comments for so long (since Sept 2007) that my first impulse when my night falls on a holiday or other special date is to check to see what I’ve done before. Sometimes that’s to make sure I haven’t already done Some Brilliant Idea and other times because I’m sure I did and want to refresh the last one! So I scrolled through 994 Top Comments-tagged diaries and found I’ve written on April 1st four prior times. The first was a genuine April Fools Snark piece, the second shared my lack of April Fools Prank Skill, and the most recent was a Pandemic-Inspired Silly Music Edition. The remaining diary was on a Serious topic because of a local tragic event.
I decided early this morning that today’s diary would be musical, because it’s been almost two months since my last music diary. And what better title or lyric keyword to use tonight than… FOOL. So let me give you some Foolish songs, and then you can share either songs or memorable April Fools pranks in the comments! Let’s get started!
- What A Fool Believes — Michael McDonald & Kenny Loggins — Both Loggins and McDonald’s own Doobie Brothers released versions in 1978. I’m partial to the Doobie Brothers version.
- Fooling Yourself (Angry Young Man) — Styx — another one of my High School Soundtrack songs.
- Fool for the City — Foghat — I heard them play this live as a college student. I cannot believe that they are still touring (albeit w only one founding member)
- Fool’s Gold — Stone Roses — I STILL love this song. danceable, great percussion and beat.
- Why Do Fools Fall In Love — Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers — you may be more familiar with the Diana Ross cover.
- I’m a Fool To Want You — Frank Sinatra — I had only heard the Billie Holiday cover until just now (yes, a real gap in my music knowledge! I was a fool!)
And lastly, no Foolish song list would be complete without including The Fools themselves! I first heard them in the 1980’s when several of their songs got a lot of MTV airplay, then had the pleasure of getting to know most of the band in the mid-2000s. It’s been a while since I’ve seen them live but they still give an EXCELLENT show, from what friends and youtube tell me. Here’s two favorites. Enjoy!
.
And with that, on to the Tops and then the Comments!

Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down. In Mark Sumner's 7 Stories to Know diary, which featured a video about the apparent significance of the number 37, nancyjones offered a clear and ENTIRELY reasonable explanation of what 37 has to teach us.
