The February 6 issue of the New York Times included an inspiring article about a program that educates poor girls from fundamentalist areas of Egypt. They learn English, learn about the United States. It cost about $2000 over two years to teach a 15-yr-old girl named Yousra Yousef to speak English. (The article is called Beni Suef Journal: A New Tongue to Win Hearts and Minds by Michael Slackman.)

Today's union workers continue to be haunted by those "Reagan Democrats" who abandoned the Democratic Party in the late 70's. After all, empty platitudes make you feel so much better, right?
Apparently Ms. Bachmann thinks it's time to revive the House Unamerican Activites Committee. She would love to chair it if she could.
The idea that an African-American with a "crazy" name (Whatever happened to those good old fashioned all-American names like Ostrowski or DiPendima or Jindal?) could be our next president is driving these people nuts.
During the depths of the Great Depression, families were torn apart, homes were lost and people were starving. Things got so bad that the newspapers entered into an agreement with the government to NOT PRINT some of the worst news. The one thing that the government feared more than anything was that the people would embrace Socialism. Then a young man named Franklin Delano Roosevelt was elected with a promise of real change....

Quietly, unobtrusively, with no announcement to the media, our hopefully next President met with Evangelicals in Chicago yesterday.
The Bush administration continues its stellar protection of the American consumer. Pet food that kills, toys made with lead and more. It took a video from an employee to get this administration enforce rules against sending sick cattle to the slaughter. Now this: http://www.iht.com/...

So another one of those wonderful so-called conservatives thinks it's oh so amusing to joke about assassinating Senator Obama.

Columnist Kathleen Parker wrote one of the nastiest columns I've read in a while. Called "Getting Bubba," she quotes a voter as saying he's planning on voting for John McCain because unlike Obama, McCain is a full blooded American! <http://www.jewishworldreview.com/kathleen/parker051408.php3?printer_friendly>
