Prejudice vs. Racism

by makr1964

I am a middle-aged, privileged white guy who has been watching the court and the world respond to the killing of Trayvon Martin.  I seldom diary, but had a rant in me this morning, so I typed it up and posted it on my Facebook account.  I don't know whether it's good or not, but it was cathartic to write, so I figured I'd share it here.

I visit the CDC web site frequently to get the latest data on the swine flu.  I've noticed an interesting (but not entirely unpredictable) trend over the last few weeks.  Children who live in red states are exponentially more likely to die from H1N1 than in other regions of the country.

Economic Stimulus (with poll)

by makr1964

I wandered over to RedState.com today and yesterday just to see what they thought of the loss of Denny Hastert's old seat.  Shockingly, there was not a single entry about it going back to Saturday morning.  It must be easier to ignore the big loss than to actively work towards winning it back this November (although I did see a KOS troll extolling the virtues of Olberweis this morning).  But, I will say that RedState did have a diary posted that gave me a good idea - something that rarely happens.  Good idea?  From Redstate?.....

Capitalizing on foreclosures

by makr1964

As cynical as I have become, I'm surprised I didn't see this coming.  Now there is at least one company you can call to choose(!!?!?!?!) foreclosure.  woo hoo.

I have been consistently an Edwards supporter since last Summer.  Like many in this community, I will support the ultimate nominee wholeheartedly for all of the obvious reasons.

And now, Barack Obama is stealing the show.  And that makes me feel great.  I get a lump in my throat every time I see him among throngs of excited voters, hanging on his every word and daring to dream of the day that he is sworn in.  I begin to breathe with ease as I envision this man leading our nation back to democracy, and restoring our Constitution with congress with a strong Democratic majority.  I envision a strong administration that restores the world's faith in the United States of America; that brings our troops home; that communicates to us honestly; the good and the bad.  I see a president who asks the citizens of this country to participate in the democracy; to keep hope alive, despite the very hard times that this country is about to enter.

But last night, I recalled the fate of every politician and national figure in the past 50 years who offered true change and true hope.

The Market is falling!  So what do MSNBC and CNN cry MSNBC, CNN?  Part of the reason for the crash is that a bomb went off in Afghanistan near Dick Cheney.

News flash - a lot of people in that region of the world want Dick Cheney dead.  But until we see shrapnel in Dick Cheney's face (like we saw just over a year ago to the Veep's friend), then I call bullshit.

All of the other reasons that these outlets provide are legit.  But they still have to make up stuff to carry water for the administration.

You'd have thought that the elections in '06 would wake up the media, but alas, they are still the lapdogs they have been since 9/12/2001

PROTEST ON OCTOBER 5th

by makr1964

Up until now, I have done what the 101st fighting keyboardists have done.  Sat here reading the blogs, typing the occasional diary or comment, and occasionally writing my memebers of Congress when important legislation was pending or had just passed.  I had not taken my message to the streets.

Now that congress (including both of my NJ Democratic senators) has passed Bush-pushed legislation essentially approving the president's ability to define what torture is, absolves those who have engaged of torture of criminal wrongdoing and eleminates habeus corpus, I can no longer sit in my chair.

If you haven't heard, a national day of mass resistance has been scheduled for Thursday, October 5th.

Rich Sexton, the democratic congressional challenger to Jim Saxton for New Jersey's 3rd district, appeared on the Colbert Report last night, September 12th.  This will rerun again today (September 13th) at 1:30 and 8:30 Eastern Time on Comedy Central.  Please get all of your NJ friends to watch this.  It will probably be the first opportunity that many folks will get to see Rich, and get is name out there.

He was interviewed as part of the "Better Know a Congressional District" segment. This is the same segment that got a lot of press coverage for Robert Wexler from Florida (although the MSM either didn't understand the satire, or was hoping that part of its audience are TV literalists).  Anyway, it's a great segment on a great show.

CNN.COM watch

CNN Blog - August 18th, 2006

This is my first in a series called CNN watch.  I was planning on beginning this in September, but this week is proving to be typical of all of the things that are wrong with CNN.COM.  I couldn't wait.

CNN.COM watch

by makr1964

After reading diaries for years and commenting for months, I have decided to take a more active role in blogging.  Each week, beginning August 28th, I will periodically go to CNN.COM on the "internets" and assess the stories of the day.  Each Friday, I will post a diary to expose my findings.
