Aljazeera, Sky News and Reuters are reporting that Hakimullah Mehsud was likely killed in a drone strike two weeks ago. Pakistan state TV was making the same report earlier, but the Pakistan army and government are saying the report is yet to be confirmed.
Imtiaz Gul, an analyst from the centre for research and security studies, told Al Jazeera: "Based on the information that we have been getting since January 14, when the drone struck, we can say that the confirmation on Mehsud's death was just a matter a time."
Baitullah Mehsud, the former leader of the Pakistani Taliban, died last August but it took the Taliban a number of weeks to admit that he had been hit in the missile strike which killed him.
There was a tape from him saying he was still alive, but he may have survived the strike and died afterwards. There have been no tapes since that date, so we will have to wait to see what develops from here.
