I've been seeing comments here and elsewhere lately about the treatment of soldiers coming back from Iraq (particularly here).
These are saying, basically, that "it seems that this time, unlike Vietnam, it's the so-called pinko commie liberals who really care about the troops and what they have to say, and are fighting to protect their benefits and health care, etc.; while the gung-ho Republicans who are most vocal in supporting the war aren't paying any attention to real vets, disrespecting them in public, doing all they can to cut their pay and benefits, etc."
I've been wondering lately if all those stories about hippies and college kids spitting on returning vets, calling them "baby-killer" and so forth, were actually conservative myths invented by the chickenhawks of the day. (I'm in my mid-thirties and too young to remember.)
So, I thought I'd ask the Vietnam vets here. How were you treated when you came home?
