I find the title of this article kinda hilarious. But only in a dark humor kinda way-- because what is this article about? Only the degradation of our environment to the point of death and destruction on a massive scale within two generations. Maybe three. A paper published in Nature by 22 prominent biologists and ecologists and our newspaper of record reports on this like it is a damn Jeopardy question. A publication like this should call forth serious discussion and the kind of drastic action the threat warrants.

What does it typically draw forth?

1) Denial

2) Helplessness / Resignation

Am I the only one that finds both of these options utterly un-fucking-acceptable?

President Obama:

But what we can't do - what I won't do - is let this economic crisis be used as an excuse to wipe out the basic protections that Americans have counted on for decades. I reject the idea that we need to ask people to choose between their jobs and their safety. I reject the argument that says for the economy to grow, we have to roll back protections that ban hidden fees by credit card companies, or rules that keep our kids from being exposed to mercury, or laws that prevent the health insurance industry from shortchanging patients.
We shouldn't be in a race to the bottom, where we try to offer the cheapest labor and the worst pollution standards.

This will be a joke* of a diary, but I hadn't seen this mentioned yet here: Bill Moyers is BACK!!

His new hourlong weekly show, called “Moyers & Company,” will focus on one-on-one interviews with people not often heard on television, “thinkers who can help us understand the chaos of this time,” Mr. Moyers said in a telephone interview. “We’re going to be concerned with the state of democracy and the state of affairs, but we will leave the daily and weekly story to others and try to do the back story.”

Feel free to post expressions of glee below. There is one call to action in all this, the show will not automatically be on the PBS lineup, we may need to tell our local stations that we want to see him. Hopefully this is a no-brainer for all PBS affiliates.

This diary is action oriented. Please bear with me :)

I just finished listening to Robert Reich on NPR. He leveled the fair and, in my opinion, accurate criticism that our President has given up the role of Educator-in-Chief. Call it using the bully pulpit, whatever. I've defended Obama against some accusations here (i.e. his fantasy is to gut social security), but in my mind Reich's point is spot on.

I've had a favorable reaction to what Obama says in his speeches. He does talk sense. He may be right in what he says, but he is playing the Tea Party game and even playing that game is wrong wrong wrong. He's ignoring jobs and the fact that cuts right now will hurt a fragile economy. He knows these things, but he's choosing only to talk about debts and deficits.

So that sucks. Now what? Do we continue sniping at him, ranting, and wishing we had a better leader? No. That would accomplish nothing. Actually, it would do harm to our cause because we could spend our time and energy in more productive ways. For example, we could become our own Educators-In-Chief and destroy the Tea Party. Which sounds better, ranting or destroying?

I have to bite my tongue not to hurl invectives at this particular congressman. My congressman. He is odious and a constant threat to the middle class. Yet I emailed him, because he represents me and I have the right to tell him how I feel. I even played nice because I value treating people with respect and dignity even if their actions make me want to ralph.

Our voices count and we need to make them heard even if we are represented by the Jim Sensnbrenners of the world. To me, telling me it isn't worth it to email him is the same as throwing in the towel. Are we here to just complain to our (relatively) small orange planet? I'm not. Don't get me wrong, I like to rant and find common cause with you all, but results only come from action. Sometimes that action involves emailing a guy who might not give a shit what I think. And you know what, it took five minutes.

Today's pie fight is an example of how we are talking past each other and wasting our time being unproductive.

I speak of the diaries "Ezra Klein Calls President Obama A Moderate Republican" and "Fox News takes over Daily Kos". Each diary has a point to make, and yet we have flames flames flames. A call for civility or a request for all sides of this debate to consider their words more carefully is unlikely to get much traction, probably because I'm not appealing to any emotions here. I'm not making DEMANDS and its not I'M RIGHT AND YOU'RE WRONG. So boring, huh?

According to the citizen activist Michael Brown who launched United Wisconsin, he has received 100,000 pledges since launching the site on February 24th--that's 10 full days of pledge gathering, on the internet, and we have nearly 20% of the commitments we need to achieve the goal of Ex-Gov. Scott Walker in 2012.

What follows is one humble suggestion on how to keep building the snowball that will flatten the Republican attack on the middle class. The ideas in this diary are meant to be taken off our little orange marble and spread around. Please consider doing so if you find this helpful.

We all have friends that are less political than we are. Maybe their heart is in the right place, but for whatever reason the news cycle of politics is not for them. They'd rather laugh at Charlie Sheen, (I admit, I am guilty of this.) Maybe they are kind of aware of what has been going on and generally support teachers and public employees. Maybe they are getting a bit angry but still feel like this problem is way bigger than them and after all, "What can one person do?"

"AH-HA!" You reply, "You can do magic! You can influence someone you don't even know!"

I only found one diary with 9 comments plugging this website so I think it would be useful to post another and explain why getting a commitment from WI voters now is so important.

A concerned citizen from Appleton, WI has launched a website, http://www.unitedwisconsin.com/ to collected pledges to recall Scott Walker. I'll let his mission speak for itself:

United Wisconsin is for Wisconsin residents to sign a pledge to recall Scott Walker. Since we can not distribute the actual petitions until 11/3/11, United Wisconsin is asking people to sign a pledge for recall as we will only have 60 days to collect 540,206 signatures. This database will be essential for a successful recall.
