International Committee of the Red Cross regional Director Fabrizio Carboni discusses the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the risks facing aid workers.
The humanitarian situation in Gaza has reached catastrophic levels as the war is now in its seventh month. With the territory’s population at imminent risk of famine and healthcare services in danger of complete collapse, Palestinians are struggling to cope.
JERUSALEM (AP) — Under heavy U.S. pressure, Israel has promised to ramp up aid to Gaza, saying last week it would open another cargo crossing and surge more trucks than ever before into the besieged enclave.
But days later, there are few signs of those promises materializing and international officials say starvation is widespread in hard-hit northern Gaza.
Samantha Power, administrator of the U.S. Agency for International Development, said this week she accepted “credible” reports that famine is now occurring in the area and urged Israel to take further steps to expedite humanitarian aid shipments.
Israel is intentionally starving Palestinians and should be held accountable for war crimes – and genocide, according to the UN’s leading expert on the right to food.
Hunger and severe malnutrition are widespread in the Gaza Strip, where about 2.2 million Palestinians are facing severe shortages resulting from Israel destroying food supplies and severely restricting the flow of food, medicines and other humanitarian supplies. Aid trucks and Palestinians waiting for humanitarian relief have come under fire.
