In a move that took most people by suprise, Infinity changed formats at two of their most poplular oldies stations in their portfolio.

At 5pm local time on Friday, without warning, the radio arm of Viacom switched the formats of WCBS-FM in New York and WJMK-FM in Chicago to the Jack format. For those of you who don't know what that is, Jack is a format where the station plays a huge playlist of songs from the 80's, 90's and 00's. Infinity moved the oldies format for both stations to online streams, but they fired the entire announcing staffs for both stations.
The real bad news, Jack is an automated format, so no need for any DJs or announcer staff. I can understand using this format in a small market, but in the first and third largest market in the US?
This sends a message to those who are outside the 18-54 market demo that they are no longer important in terms of having a voice in what radio can do for them. I guess that in these greedy times, those who apparently have no money no longer get to have their music played on the radio.
