Donald Trump’s ignorance of American politics is legendary, so of course—of course—he was utterly confounded when Michael Wolff of the Hollywood Reporter asked him about the single most serious issue facing our closest international ally:
"And Brexit? Your position?" I ask.
"Huh?"
"Brexit."
"Hmm."
"The Brits leaving the EU," I prompt, realizing that his lack of familiarity with one of the most pressing issues in Europe is for him no concern nor liability at all.
"Oh yeah, I think they should leave."
Fortunately, Daily Kos has got The Donald covered. Our own David Beard put together a crackerjack explainer on “Brexit," the ugly portmanteau that’s a shorthand for the possible British exit from the European Union, which the UK will vote on in a referendum on June 23. You won’t be surprised to learn that Trump's grasping answer was wrong, too: Leaving the EU would be a bad idea, as Beard (and Barack Obama) have detailed. Polls currently show the referendum failing—meaning Britain would remain in the EU—by a narrow margin.
Trump luckily has the chance to learn all about Brexit later this month when he takes time off from his presidential campaign to visit the UK for the re-opening of a golf club he owns in Scotland. But we’re going to guess that Britons will feel he’s the one who should leave, posthaste.
