Team Clinton isn’t just eyeing North Carolina anymore. From the Washington Post:
Representatives of Hillary Clinton’s campaign phoned state Democratic leaders in Arizona and Georgia on Monday night to alert them of plans to begin transferring funds to hire more field organizers in those states, according to several Democratic officials familiar with the calls.
Polls in both states — which Republican nominee Mitt Romney carried in 2012 — show a tightening race between Clinton and Donald Trump. The move by the Clinton campaign suggests a bid to expand the number of battleground states in play in November. [...]
In Arizona, a RealClearPolitics average of recent polls gives Trump a lead of less than 1 percentage point over Clinton. In Georgia, Clinton has an average lead of nearly 2 percentage points, according to the publication.
This investment represents not only an expansion of battleground states that Trump must hold to even have a chance of winning the election, it also has down-ballot implications for House and Senate races, not to mention state races. Plus, Trump will likely have to expend precious resources to defend these normally reliable GOP states. In 2012, Mitt Romney won Arizona by 9 points, and he took Georgia by 8 points.
Polls in Georgia have been trending positive for Clinton ever since the GOP convention ended. The main effort there will aim to turn out black, Latino, and Asian voters. The focus in Arizona will be around Maricopa County, home to Phoenix and a growing Latino population.
