More bombs sent to people on Donald Trump’s enemies list keep being discovered, with former Vice President Joe Biden and actor and Trump critic Robert DeNiro among the latest targets. Rep. Maxine Waters—one of Trump’s absolute favorite targets—is distinguished as the only person so far to have been sent two bombs, one to her office in Washington, D.C., and another to Los Angeles. Both were intercepted at postal facilities before reaching her.
The wave of terrorism started on Monday, with a device left in the mailbox of George Soros, the billionaire philanthropist who’s been widely reviled on the right for his political giving (and whose name has become a stand-in for “Jewish”). Early Wednesday, news broke that similar devices had been sent to former President Barack Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, with both being intercepted by the Secret Service. That was followed by CNN being forced to evacuate its New York City offices due to a bomb addressed to former CIA director and MSNBC commentator John Brennan, who Trump stripped of his security clearance in retaliation for sharp criticism. A package sent to former Attorney General Eric Holder arrived at the offices of Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz because her address had been used as the return address on that package as on at least several of the others.
Some of the bombs sent to people in the New York area have been delivered in person—the CNN package reportedly came through a courier service but still had stamps on it—while others have been sent through the U.S. mail.
A law enforcement official said the devices were made with a 1-inch-by-6-inch length of PVC pipe filled with suspected pyrotechnic powder and broken glass to serve as shrapnel. They had a small button battery with a digital clock as a timer and a hot bridge wire initiator, the official said.
Donald Trump condemned the attacks in brief remarks on Wednesday afternoon and refrained from some of his most appalling habits in a Wednesday evening rally … but he still held that rally, and used it and Twitter to quickly pivot to blaming the media, the kind of attack politics responding to bombs sent to people he has vocally attacked by calling on the media to “stop the endless hostility and constant negative and often false attacks and stories.”
