Earlier today, an Israeli/Palestine diary was posted about H.R. 185. Given the anti-Semitism and the lack of a working link, the comments section focused on that rather than on the bill at hand.
I decided to check out this bill for myself and see what it was all about.
Now that I've read through the bill, I see the diarist was right. That bill goes against our fundamental American values.
More below the fold.
The bill, written by the crazy, crazy Marilyn Musgrave of Colorado
It has the following purpose:
To require the Secretary of Agriculture to provide compensation for certain livestock losses.
Here's the worrisome part.
Livestock Indemnity Payments-
(1) IN GENERAL- The Secretary shall use such sums as are necessary of funds of the Commodity Credit Corporation to make livestock indemnity payments to producers on farms that have incurred livestock losses during calendar year 2006 or 2007, or both, due to a disaster, as determined by the Secretary, including losses due to blizzard and drought.
(2) PAYMENT RATES- Indemnity payments to a producer on a farm under paragraph (1) shall be made at a rate of not less than 30 percent of the market value of the applicable livestock on the day before the date of death of the livestock, as determined by the Secretary.
The way I read it, that means that should a certain person steal some sheep to satisfy certain needs of his, the taxpayer would have to repay the farmer for those sheep.
This is anti-American. That certain person should have to pay for the irrevocable mental trauma caused to the sheep.
