Sit back, put up your feet, and grab yourself a Guinness in honor of St. Paddy's Day!
Before you get too tipsy, please sign the petition to make St. Patrick's Day an official US Holiday! (It's um...a bit too late for this year - but maybe we can shoot for a million signatures by 3/17/09 instead!!)
Check out this hilarious video:
Are you wondering how we all came to celebrate St. Patrick's Day on 3/17?
Well, here's some history - from the wiki (you want something more accurate than the wiki? You'll have to ask one of our resident historians...musings85 or Unitary Moonbat. Dammit Jim, I'm not a historian!):
Saint Patrick's Day is just an annual celebration of the feast of Saint Patrick - a patron saint of Ireland.
Irish colonists brought Saint Patrick's Day to what is now the United States of America. The first civic and public celebration of Saint Patrick's Day in the 13 colonies took place in Boston, Massachusetts in 1737.[28] During this first celebration The Charitable Irish Society of Boston organized what was the first Saint Patrick's Day Parade in the colonies on 17 March 1737.[29] The first celebration of Saint Patrick's Day in New York City was held at the Crown and Thistle Tavern in 1756,[30] and New York's first Saint Patrick's Day Parade was held on 17 March 1762 by Irish soldiers in the British Army. In 1780, General George Washington, who commanded soldiers of Irish descent in the Continental Army, allowed his troops a holiday on 17 March. This event became known as The St. Patrick's Day Encampment of 1780.[29] Notably, George Washington forced the British evacuation of Boston on an earlier St. Patrick's Day--March 17, 1776--a day now celebrated in Suffolk County as Evacuation Day. Today, Saint Patrick's Day is widely celebrated in America by Irish and non-Irish alike.
I can tell you that we've been dyeing the river green here in Chicago since 1961! Yay Chicago!! I can also add that those green milkshakes they sell at McDonald's are great when you add some Bailey's Irish Cream to them!

In his comment, Malacandra starts a dKos-in-history meta thread in JeffLieber's most recent meta diary "I remember when DKos was GOOD!" I contributed some of the followups, but Malacandra really, really rose to the occasion. His absolute top-of-the-top is here.
From brillig:

From asimbagirl:
Malacandra's funny in the entire thread, but this comment stood out, with the utterly classic insults. It's from JeffLieber's recommended diary.

I wanted to submit the following comment (by CA Libertarian) from SisTwo's IGTNT diary.
It represents an attitude that we all need to take regarding both the
war, the candidate wars, and everything in between.
From Elise (that's me):
Democratic Luntz has the goods on Obama's high school yearbook. rhfactor's video in the thread is hilarious.
polecat reminded me of Mr. Rogers. Did you hear, he was a marine sniper! Actually - that's totally not true, but everyone always says that to me whenever I say anything about Mr. Rogers.
