WASHINGTON — Not just the White House is up for grabs in November — every member of the House of Representatives faces re-election, and a top Democrat predicted Tuesday his party would “take back the majority” in 2012.
Steny Hoyer, the House’s number two Democrat, said prospects were favorable for regaining the chamber two years after President Barack Obama’s party suffered a humbling mid-term election rout at the hands of Republicans.
I've been saying for months now, based on the state of the
pathetic clown car escapees that the GOP had running for President, and now Romney's horrific
electoral and demographic challenges with Latino's, Women and now
Young People, that odds are very strong that Barack Obama will be re-elected President.
I'm not saying it'll be easy, or a lead pipe cinch, but it's highly likely.
However without a cooperative Congress, how much can that President really get done? The real battle we have in front of us isn't just for President, it's for control of Congress - and if Hoyer's right and there's some daylight dawning in that direction - we need to make sure that door doesn't slam shut again.
You can tell that Hoyer may be on to something when you hear current Speaker John Beohner say things like this.
Speaker of the House John Boehner suggested there were cracks in the Republican Party’s armor, warning earlier Tuesday on Fox that “there’s a one in three chance that we could lose” the House to Democrats. “I believe that we will (keep control of the House), but we’ve got a real challenge,” Boehner said.
“We have 50 of our members in tough races (and) 89 freshmen running for their first re-election.” ... Boehner pointed to 32 districts — in states like California and New York where Obama is heavily favored, and where there are no major US Senate races — where Republican incumbents “are frankly pretty vulnerable.”
Still Hoyer thought John-Boy was shaving the odds.
“I think there’s a higher chance than one in three, I think at best from his perspective, it’s 50-50,” Hoyer told reporters as he laid out the prospects for Democrats to win dozens of districts. “We’re going to pick up a lot of seats, and I think we’ll take back the majority.”
50-50? hmmm That's promising. That's doable.
But will it happen? Will Obama have enough coat-tails in those 32 districts to bring them over to the Democratic aisle? And for perspective, Democrats need a total pickup of 28 seats to take back the House. Is Steny right?
Eric Cantor (R-Bizzaro World) doesn't think so.
“I am very confident that we will strengthen our majority,”
But then again, considering the source - ie. Cantor - I wouldn't believe that snake-oil charlatan if he told me "Rain is Wet". This is the man who sponsored a bill that would supposedly create
39,000 jobs by giving away $46 Billion in tax cuts (costing approx $1.1 Million each), after complaining that the Stimulus Bill allegedly cost a
shocking $248,000 per job. This is the man who said he had "full confidence" in
birther Rep. Cliff Stearns. He's the man who claimed "It's not fair" and turned around and blamed the President and Democrats for the fact that
67% of the American support raising taxes on the rich, and 80% oppose cutting Medicare. Anything he says is more likely the opposite of what the truth might be, so if he's saying that the GOP is going to "strengthen it's majority" - you can pretty much take to the bank their going to do the opposite.
Things may be looking up.
