Good morning kogs and kossacks in Dailykosland! Merry Monday and welcome to the working week—a short working week for most of us.
A few days ago, when I was looking through boxes for something else, I found a Slinky. I was compelled to stop and play with it. For more than 50 years I have loved everything about the Slinky: the silver/metallic color, the swoosh swoosh swoosh sound, the rhythm you could control faster or slower (it would be a cool percussion instrument for the right kind of song), the vibrations in your hands as the coils fell on each side, the fact that it was a unisex toy that both boys and girls played with, and of course the amazing way it goes down stairs or an incline by itself. I never learned how to make it stair step walk from one of my hands to the other. A Slinky still has the ability to fascinate me.
A few weeks ago, I was in the Whole Paycheck Whole Foods near my office and saw a collection of old fashioned toys for sale by the checkout counters. The first toy on the pile was a pump action spinning top! I took it and started pumping it on the cash register conveyor belt at a station that was closed. A woman about my age stopped immediately and started watching it spin along with me.
A small boy who was with her asked, "What IS that?" "A toy," she said. Perplexed, he repeated, "A toy?" "An old fashioned toy," she said wearily as she and I stood there watching it spin. The child looked at both of us as if we were insane. I imagined he was thinking, a toy? What's fun about it? It doesn't DO anything! It doesn't change shape or have video or shoot people or anything! When the top fell over I pumped it again, enjoying the whirr whirr whirr whirr whirr before I let it go and watched it spin on the conveyor belt. It filled me with such happy nostalgia. I look at the price: only seven dollars. I almost bought that thing! And it didn't even hum!
Another favorite lo-tech plaything was Tinkertoys. Back in the day, erector sets were considered a boy's toy (grrrrr!) so I took what I could get. I was really fond of building weird asymmetrical contraptions with Tinkertoys. Could amuse myself for hours. I also liked plain wooden blocks, and those giant cardboard ones we had at school. And don't get me started on Spirograph! My math prodigy geometry-loving heart just went wild for figuring out how to make specific patterns with Spirograph!
The spaced out music really adds to the Spirograph experience, man!
Insert your own analysis here about kids (and adults) who are begging Santa for an Xbox360 that costs a couple hundred bucks, plus "Call of Duty: Ghosts" that costs another $50. Or using the excuse that Wii helps kids exercise in order to justify its cost. All I know is that I had a lot of mindless fun with classic lo-tech toys that didn't "do anything". They didn't have batteries, they didn't need consoles, they didn't cost hundreds of dollars. They left room for my imagination to be involved and did not do all of the playthinking for me.
At least I have my Slinky!
It's Slinky! It's Slinky! For fun it's the best of the toys! It's Slinky! It's Slinky! The favorite of girls and boys!
Everyone wants a Slinky. You ought to get a Slinky.
Do you have memories of a favorite lo-tech toy?
